Caboolture’s Snakes Rugby Club Eyes Premier Grade by 2030 with New Leadership and Growing Junior Base

Caboolture Rugby Club has set its sights on Premier Grade rugby by 2030, backed by a new $6.4 million clubhouse, a 20 per cent year-on-year growth in junior numbers since 2023 and a new general manager bringing Premier Grade experience to Petersen Road.

The Snakes, as the club is known, have appointed Nigel Statham as general manager to lead the charge, with a strategic plan that maps a clear pathway from four-year-old beginners through to colts and eventually senior Premier Grade competition. The club also plans to appoint a performance director to support and develop its coaching staff. Statham describes this role as a move to “coach the coaches,” a step that adds a professional structure reflecting the seriousness of the 2030 ambition.

This season the club fields Under 12, 14, 16, 18 and Open women’s teams, and the goal is to have both men’s and women’s sides competing in Premier Grade alongside all junior teams playing in Brisbane Division One competitions by the end of the decade. It is an ambitious target for a regional club, but the foundations supporting it are more substantial than most.

Building the Pathway

The strategy at Caboolture Rugby Club rests on a simple but demanding idea: build a seamless pathway from the earliest junior levels through to the highest competition available, so that players who grow up in the Caboolture area never have to leave their club to chase elite rugby.

Rugby Operations Manager Sam Hoffman describes the club’s presence in local primary schools as central to that model. The club runs rugby programmes across most local primary schools and organises a competition for local high schools, many of which are traditionally rugby league environments. Bringing union into those spaces early, at a price point Hoffman describes as among the cheapest in sport, gives the club access to players who might otherwise never have considered rugby union as their game.

Statham points to the existing junior section, the backing of Caboolture Sports Club and the suburb’s extraordinary population growth as the three pillars that make the 2030 target realistic rather than aspirational.

A Void Worth Filling

One of the more compelling arguments for Caboolture’s Premier Grade ambitions is geographic. Premier Grade competition currently draws from clubs concentrated in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, leaving a significant gap in the middle of south-east Queensland’s fastest-growing corridor. Statham describes Caboolture Rugby Club’s ambition as becoming the Moreton Bay club, representing the entire region rather than a single suburb.

That framing matters because the Moreton Bay region is one of Australia’s fastest-growing local government areas, with Caboolture itself sitting at the heart of a population corridor that is projected to continue expanding well into the 2030s. A Premier Grade rugby club in that corridor would draw from a catchment that does not currently have one, which is both the challenge and the opportunity the Snakes are positioning themselves to seize.

Statham also notes the broader tailwind from rugby’s international calendar. The men’s Rugby World Cup arrives in Australia in 2027, followed by the women’s Rugby World Cup in 2029, creating a window of elevated public interest in the sport that the club intends to capitalise on through its junior growth programmes and community presence.

Admission to Premier Grade is not guaranteed by application alone. Statham is clear that the club needs to demonstrate consistency, build a winning culture and deliver a high-quality product on and off the field before the pathway to the top competition opens. Good programmes, good mentors and good coaches build the culture, and success brings the players.

Why This Matters to the Caboolture Community

For families in Caboolture and the broader Moreton Bay region, the Snakes’ 2030 vision represents something worth paying attention to. A club with a genuine pathway from primary school to Premier Grade gives young players in the area a local sporting home that can take them as far as their talent and dedication allow, without the disruption of switching clubs or relocating to Brisbane.

The club’s affordable pricing, primary school programmes and growing women’s competition all point toward an organisation that is thinking about community access rather than just elite outcomes. Junior numbers growing at 20 per cent a year since 2023 suggests the community is already responding, and the new $6.4 million clubhouse at Petersen Road gives the club the facilities to support that growth properly.

Caboolture Sports Club Acquires Debt-Ridden Venue to Prevent Closure

Caboolture Sports Club has taken over operations of a long-running venue in the Glass House Mountains, ensuring its continuation despite significant financial challenges.

Financial Lifeline Secures Venue’s Future in Caboolture Region

A major operational shift has been confirmed for Club Glass House, following an overwhelming vote by its members to approve acquisition by the Caboolture Sports Club. The agreement ensures the 50-year-old venue avoids closure after a period of significant financial difficulty.

Background: Club’s Financial Struggles

Club Glass House faced potential insolvency after reporting a loss of $210,822 in the nine months to 31 March 2025. The club’s financial position deteriorated rapidly, with net assets totalling $265,084 and outstanding debts including $138,000 in poker machine GST.

An independent audit by MGI South Queensland confirmed that without immediate intervention, the club would not be able to continue trading beyond June. These findings led the board, appointed in December 2024, to seek urgent assistance.

Caboolture Organisation Steps In

After other efforts to gain financial backing through clubs, grants, or loans proved unsuccessful, Club Glass House was offered a solution through the not-for-profit CSC Group, which includes Caboolture Sports Club. CSC committed to clearing all existing debts and investing $1.5 million into immediate upgrades.

Improvements include resurfacing the car park, upgrading lighting, and refurbishing interior spaces. CSC has also committed to retaining all staff and maintaining a licence for the Glass House Country Bowls Club to continue operations at the site.

Alternatives Exhausted Before Vote

Before the acquisition, Club Glass House leadership explored multiple options. However, none were viable without financial guarantees. The membership ultimately voted 232 to 29 in favour of the acquisition by CSC. Board members stated that, without the agreement, they risked personal liability for debts and the club’s operations would have ceased within months.

Community Reaction and Reflections

Some members expressed frustration over the club’s financial decline, with concerns raised about budgeting practices, above-average wages, and loyalty program expenses. Others acknowledged the current board’s transparency and efforts in navigating the crisis.

Former management figures commented on the club’s past direction and financial handling, noting misalignment between reported growth and actual financial sustainability.

Future Outlook for the Venue

With the transfer now underway, Club Glass House will become the fourth licensed venue under the CSC Group. The group originated in 1994 through the consolidation of six local sporting clubs and now operates multiple venues across the Moreton Bay Region. CSC currently provides over $1.8 million annually in community support.

The finalisation of the transfer will ensure the club’s continuity, with investments aimed at stabilising operations and supporting the local community into the future.

Caboolture Sports Club Announces $20 Million Upgrade

Caboolture Sports Club will transform its 3,400-square-metre venue with a $20 million renovation. The renovation will add new dining and entertainment options and significantly expand its children’s facilities.

The renovation will begin in April and be completed by mid-2026.

Major Upgrades and New Facilities

The extensive project will significantly change nearly every area of the club. Plans include completely redesigning the existing restaurant, introducing a new cafe, and building a fully supervised children’s club.

The existing restaurant’s seating capacity will more than double, expanding from 165 to 340 seats, and the cafe’s seating capacity will increase from 60 to 140 seats.

The new cafe will also employ an in-house pastry chef. The restaurant will offer an expanded steak and smoked meat menu. A new sports bar, equipped with a 10-metre by 5-metre LED sports TV wall and keno terminals, will accommodate 120 people. A separate cocktail bar will host live entertainment, specialty tastings, and boutique events.

Children’s Entertainment and Family Amenities

A significant focus of the renovation is creating a large children’s play area. This space will include a playground, climbing jungle, arts and crafts area, and a movie theatre. Supervision will be provided for children aged three and over. The upgrade also features a parents’ room, modernised bathrooms, and updated staff amenities.

Construction Phases and Temporary Closures

The renovation will be carried out in three stages. Stage one, expected to be completed by August 2025, will focus on the new cafe, cafe kitchen, lounge, cocktail bar, and ladies’ amenities. The sports bar will temporarily move to the old Grevillea Room during this phase.

Stage two will involve the construction of the new restaurant, restaurant kitchen, restaurant bar, ladies’ amenities, kids’ club, and movie theatre. The Laneway Cafe, Mill Restaurant, and the current kids’ room will be closed during this stage.

Stage three, scheduled for completion by mid-2026, will address the new foyer entrance, gaming bar, sports bar, parents’ room, and staff amenities. The main entrance will be closed during this final stage, and a temporary entrance will be provided.

Community Impact and Job Creation

The club’s management stated that the project will create approximately 50 new jobs. The renovation will also support local businesses during construction and utilise locally sourced ingredients in the revamped menu where possible. The Caboolture Sports Club has contributed over $12 million to local initiatives in the past five years.

Caboolture Sports Club Unveils New Cricket Nets

The Caboolture Sports Club has officially opened its new cricket nets at the Grant Road Sports Complex, marking a significant improvement in local cricket facilities. This development is expected to enhance participation opportunities for the community.

The project, which replaced the old 3-lane outdoor nets with new 5-lane outdoor nets, was made possible through a $250,000 grant from Round 1 of the Queensland’s Minor Infrastructure Program (MIP). The funding aimed to improve the quality and safety of cricket facilities at the club.

The MIP, administered by the Department of Tourism and Sport, is designed to support Queensland’s active industry in delivering new, upgraded, and end-of-life infrastructure projects. In its first round, the program distributed a total of $16.36 million across 91 shovel-ready projects throughout the state.

Building on the success of Round 1, Queensland combined Round 2 of the MIP with the $30 million Inclusive Facilities Fund, resulting in a substantial $45 million investment in community sport and active recreation infrastructure projects.

This initiative aligns with the 10-year Activate! Queensland strategy, which aims to encourage more Queenslanders to engage in physical activity more frequently.

The completion of this project at the Caboolture Sports Club represents a positive step towards achieving the strategy’s goals, providing improved facilities that may inspire increased cricket participation in the local community.

Aside from training, the women will also be hosting community programs and holding open sessions for the fans.

The arrangement is a testament that the Burpengary sports facility is of world-class standard.

It comes as Council has invested $103 million in local sports infrastructure that will help deliver more centres of excellence, especially in football.

The Cararinhas are due to face France, another sports heavyweight, during the Women’s World Cup in Brisbane on the 28th of July 2023. Tickets are already on sale online until March 2023.
