Sunnylands Sourdough Moves From Home Kitchen To Burpengary Shopfront

Sunnylands Sourdough has moved from Palma Currie’s home kitchen into a permanent Burpengary shopfront after support from local customers, markets and nearby businesses helped the bakery expand.

A Shared Loaf Brings The First Orders

The business began when Currie baked sourdough at home and delivered bread to a friend whose family had recently welcomed a baby.

After the loaf was shared through Volume Beauty Bar’s social media pages, people began contacting Currie to ask whether they could buy bread.

She obtained a food licence as demand increased and began selling at Burpengary Markets. The home operation gradually expanded beyond traditional sourdough loaves as more customers encountered the business through local markets and social media.

Local Businesses Support Sunnylands Sourdough

Basil & Vine gave Currie an early opportunity to supply sourdough for its restaurant. That experience gave her the confidence to leave her previous job and concentrate on developing the bakery.

BM Farm Fresh also promoted and sold Sunnylands bread through its market, introducing the business to more customers.

The bakery eventually outgrew its home setup. Currie and her husband later noticed a vacant shopfront while driving through Burpengary and decided to enquire about the lease.

Sunnylands officially opened shortly before Christmas and became fully established in the premises in January. It now operates beside Hungry Jack’s at Shop 2/163–165 Station Road, Burpengary.

Irish Roots Shape The Bakery

The Sunnylands name comes from a bakery in Currie’s hometown in Ireland, maintaining a connection between the Burpengary business and her Irish background.

Each artisan sourdough loaf takes about 24 hours to produce using flour, salt and water. The bakery describes its bread as naturally leavened, slow-fermented and made without additives.

Its range has expanded to include sourdough pies and sausage rolls, with the pastry also made using the bakery’s sourdough mother. Toasties, coffee and other freshly baked goods are available from the shop.

Zoe and Karen were initially customers before coming out of retirement to work at the bakery. They have since joined Currie behind the counter at the Station Road premises.

Customer Reviews Highlight Favourite Products

Customer reviews have recorded reactions to both the bakery’s bread and its wider range of baked goods.

Robyn Davidson described the products as fresh and noted the bakery as a breakfast option, also mentioning its bread and cupcakes.

Courtney Miles identified the pesto loaf and focaccia as current favourites and expressed interest in trying more products from the menu.

Rachel Cassar said a warm loaf collected from the Burpengary Meadows markets changed her view of sourdough. She later returned for both the classic loaf and newer variations.

Ashleigh Short praised the crust and interior of the bread and highlighted the focaccia, muffins and banana bread among the products tried.

Sunnylands Sourdough is open from Wednesday to Sunday at its Burpengary shopfront.
