Fourteen School Closures Listed Across Moreton Bay Amid Heavy Rain

Caboolture Today — Thu, 22 Oct 2026 03:50:55 +0000

Fourteen school and campus closures have been listed across Moreton Bay, including facilities in Caboolture, Morayfield, Burpengary and Beachmere, as heavy rainfall and flooding disrupt communities across the region. Read: Floodwater Surrounds Morayfield Shopping Centre Carpark During Heavy Rain The Queensland Department of Education's emergency closures register, last updated at 10:55 a.m. on Thursday 22 October 2026, identified three state school closures, ten independent-school entries and one Catholic-sector closure. Caboolture State High School, Morayfield State High School and Minimbah State School were the three government schools named in the register. Independent schools across Caboolture and neighbouring communities were also affected, while Deception Bay Flexible School appeared under Catholic school closures. Photo Credit: QLD Dept of Education Three state schools appear on register The Department's downloadable closure list identifies Caboolture State High School on Lee Street, Morayfield State High School on Visentin Road and Minimbah State School at the corner of Walkers Road and Minimbah Drive. The register describes listed facilities as unsafe for staff and students to attend, but does not specify whether individual closures resulted from flooding on school grounds, unsafe road access or other weather-related hazards. No physical damage to the three schools has been independently confirmed. Independent schools named from Caboolture to Wights Mountain Ten independent-school entries also appear in the Department's register, including Australian Christian College – Moreton, Caboolture Montessori School, Grace Lutheran College's Caboolture campus, Horizons College of Learning and Enrichment, and St Paul's Lutheran Primary School. Aviva College has separate entries for its Caboolture and Morayfield locations. Birali Steiner School at Beachmere, The Younity School at Burpengary and Samford Valley Steiner School at Wights Mountain are also listed. Deception Bay Flexible School, on Silver Street, appears as the sole Catholic-sector entry. The Department warns that independent and Catholic school closure information relies on reports supplied by third parties and may not always be accurate. Families are advised to contact their schools directly for updated attendance arrangements. .bson-school-closures { font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #0b2540; background: #f6f3ec; border: 1px solid #d9dedc; border-top: 4px solid #0f8f8f; border-radius: 8px; padding: 20px; margin: 24px 0; box-sizing: border-box; } .bson-school-closures *, .bson-school-closures *::before, .bson-school-closures *::after { box-sizing: border-box; } .bson-school-closures h2 { font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.3; margin: 0 0 8px; color: #0b2540; } .bson-school-closures h3 { font-size: 16px; margin: 20px 0 8px; padding-bottom: 7px; border-bottom: 2px solid #0f8f8f; color: #0b2540; } .bson-school-closures p { font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.55; margin: 0 0 12px; } .bson-school-closures .bson-school-note { font-size: 13px; color: #354b59; } .bson-school-closures .bson-school-grid { display: grid; grid-template-columns: repeat(2, minmax(0, 1fr)); gap: 8px; } .bson-school-closures .bson-school-card { background: #fff; border: 1px solid #d9dedc; border-left: 3px solid #0f8f8f; border-radius: 4px; padding: 10px 12px; min-width: 0; overflow-wrap: anywhere; } .bson-school-closures .bson-school-name { font-size: 14px; font-weight: 700; line-height: 1.4; } .bson-school-closures .bson-school-suburb { font-size: 12px; color: #354b59; margin-top: 4px; } .bson-school-closures .bson-school-footer { border-top: 1px solid #cbd6d4; margin-top: 18px; padding-top: 12px; } .bson-school-closures a { color: #086b6b; text-decoration: underline; overflow-wrap: anywhere; } @media (max-width: 520px) { .bson-school-closures { padding: 14px; } .bson-school-closures .bson-school-grid { grid-template-columns: minmax(0, 1fr); } .bson-school-closures h2 { font-size: 18px; } } Schools on the emergency closure register The Queensland Department of Education's plain-text register lists the following schools and campus entries. Floodwater Surrounds Morayfield Shopping Centre Carpark During Heavy Rain

Caboolture Today — Thu, 22 Oct 2026 07:31:38 +0000

Floodwater surrounded a covered parking structure at Morayfield Shopping Centre as intense rainfall inundated parts of Morayfield, prompting questions about access to the retail complex during Thursday's severe weather. Read: Person Rescued Uninjured from Floodwater on Beerburrum Road at Elimbah On 22 October 2026, the Bureau of Meteorology recorded 168 mm of rain at Sheep Station Creek in Morayfield during the three hours to 7:30 a.m. The downpour brought flash flooding to surrounding areas, with widespread disruption reported across the Caboolture district. Photographs posted on Facebook by Tony Palmer show muddy floodwater covering an outdoor area beside the shopping centre. Water surrounded a parking direction sign and extended beneath a covered structure, with a vehicle ramp visible nearby. Palmer said he had reached an upper undercover carpark when he encountered the flooding. He also reported that the shopping centre was closed at the time of his visit, although the precise time and extent of any access restrictions have not been established. Flooding reported near Kmart parking area Separate reports identified flooding near the undercover parking area associated with Kmart, with access disruptions reported around William Berry Drive. The photographs shared by Palmer show substantial inundation near the parking structure but do not independently establish whether water entered Kmart or which vehicle entrances were affected. Centre management confirms trading continues Morayfield Shopping Centre subsequently advised customers on its official Facebook page that the complex remained open, although some individual retailers might be closed. Management asked customers to contact individual stores for their latest trading hours. The statement did not identify affected retailers or provide details of parking restrictions. Heavy rainfall affects Morayfield The shopping centre, at 171 Morayfield Road, houses Kmart, Coles, Woolworths, Target and Big W, along with more than 150 specialty retailers. It provides over 3,000 parking spaces, most of them undercover. The disruption came as heavy rain affected Morayfield and neighbouring communities across Moreton Bay, with flooding reported on local roads during the morning. Person Rescued Uninjured from Floodwater on Beerburrum Road at Elimbah

Caboolture Today — Thu, 22 Oct 2026 02:35:58 +0000

A person has reportedly been rescued without injury after emergency services responded to a vehicle caught in floodwater on Beerburrum Road at Elimbah, as heavy rainfall swept across the Moreton Bay region. Read: Heavy Rain Raises Burpengary Creek Flood Concerns as Warnings Reported Emergency services attended the road at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, 22 October 2026, following reports of a driver trapped in floodwater. Contemporary coverage indicates the person was brought to safety without injury, although the rescue circumstances have not been confirmed directly by authorities. An earlier alert from Queensland Emergency Response identified the location as near Elimbah State School. The social media post initially reported uncertainty about whether anyone remained inside the vehicle. Details of the responding agencies, the vehicle's recovery and how the person became stranded have not been established. Flooding closes roads around Elimbah The incident occurred during intense rainfall that affected Caboolture, Morayfield, Burpengary and surrounding communities. Beerburrum recorded a reported 165 mm of rain in the three hours to approximately 7:30 a.m., with flooded roads disrupting travel across the district. Road-closure information published during Thursday's flooding identified Beerburrum Road at Elimbah, approximately one kilometre south of Eaton Road, as closed because of flooding. Another affected section was listed at King John Creek Bridge in Caboolture, between Porter Road and Mansfield Road. Both closure locations were recorded during the wider weather event. Available information does not establish whether either closure was directly connected to the rescue near Elimbah State School. Multiple floodwater rescues were reported elsewhere in South East Queensland, while emergency services dealt with numerous requests for assistance. Local road disruptions were accompanied by school closures and changes to transport services. Drivers warned as floodwater covers roads Queensland's If It's Flooded, Forget It campaign warns that submerged roads may conceal damaged surfaces, strong currents and unexpected depths. Drivers are advised to turn around rather than attempt to cross floodwater, regardless of their vehicle type. Heavy Rain Raises Burpengary Creek Flood Concerns as Warnings Reported

Caboolture Today — Thu, 22 Oct 2026 02:16:48 +0000

Heavy rainfall across Burpengary and Morayfield has brought renewed flood concerns along Burpengary Creek, with reports of rapidly rising water and warnings affecting nearby residential areas. Read: Severe Storm Brings Flooding, Hail, and Roof Collapses in Morayfield On Thursday, 22 October 2026, the Bureau of Meteorology recorded 127 millimetres of rain at Burpengary's Mathew Creek gauge in the three hours to 6:45 a.m. Sheep Station Creek in Morayfield received 128 millimetres over the same period, as severe thunderstorms brought dangerous flash-flooding conditions to parts of Moreton Bay. Residential warnings reported near Burpengary Creek Contemporary reports described a rapid rise in Burpengary Creek and prepare-to-leave advice for residents around Morayfield Road, O'Brien Road, Junction Road and Childs Drive. The original warning boundaries, issue time and subsequent changes have not been independently confirmed from council emergency records. The reported advice should not be confused with an evacuation order or evidence that households have already left their properties. Residents can check the City of Moreton Bay Disaster Dashboard for official local warnings and emergency information. Flood conditions may change rapidly, particularly after intense rainfall across the catchment. Dale Street gauge tracks creek flooding Burpengary Creek is monitored at Dale Street through an automatic river-height gauge owned by the City of Moreton Bay. The Bureau's published flood classifications put minor flooding at 9 metres, moderate flooding at 10 metres and major flooding at 10.9 metres at the gauge. The readings refer to gauge height, not the depth of water over neighbouring roads or homes. A precise, timestamped Dale Street reading for the 22 October event has not been independently established. Without the observation record, the reported extent of the creek's rise cannot be confirmed. Previous floods show the creek's exposure Burpengary Creek has a documented history of substantial flooding. The Dale Street gauge reached 11.19 metres in January 2011, 10.84 metres in February 2022 and 9.84 metres in January 2024. The Bureau's flood-history records show how quickly the catchment can be affected by major rainfall events, although previous flood peaks do not establish the severity of the current event. During the February 2022 floods, widespread inundation damaged property and infrastructure across the Pine and Caboolture catchments. Morayfield was among the communities affected by flash flooding. Residents urged to monitor official updates The Bureau identifies the Pine and Caboolture catchments as susceptible to flash flooding, particularly during periods of intense rainfall. Read: Draft Plan Released for Centenary Lakes Sports Complex Upgrade Motorists should check QLDTraffic before travelling and avoid roads affected by floodwater. Flooded crossings must not be entered, even where the water appears shallow. Residents needing storm or flood assistance can contact the State Emergency Service on 132 500. Where to Get Sandbags in Brisbane and Moreton Bay During Heavy Rain

Caboolture Today — Thu, 22 Oct 2026 01:44:43 +0000

Residents preparing for flooding across Brisbane and Moreton Bay have different sandbag collection arrangements depending on where they live, with five established collection points in Brisbane and emergency-activated stations across Moreton Bay. Following heavy rainfall on Thursday, 22 October, Brisbane City Council's five permanent storm-season collection points remained covered by its published 24-hour arrangements. City of Moreton Bay, meanwhile, operates temporary self-service stations that must be activated before residents can collect sandbags. Brisbane's five sandbag collection points Brisbane City Council provides pre-filled sandbags from five depots throughout the October-to-March storm season. Its published arrangements specify collection 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at the following locations: Darra: South Depot, 38 Shamrock Road Lota: Depot, 58 Herbert Street Morningside: Balmoral Depot, 9 Redfern Street Newmarket: SES Depot, 66 Wilston Road Zillmere: North Depot, 33 Jennings Street The collection points are part of the council's established storm-season service rather than temporary locations opened solely in response to Thursday's rainfall. Individual stock levels have not been confirmed, and residents should check official updates before travelling. Additional self-service stations may be established across Brisbane during significant severe weather. No extra location was independently verified during this review. Moreton Bay stations require activation City of Moreton Bay operates free sandbag collection stations when significant rainfall or potential flooding is forecast. Its published register identifies 13 sites across the region, although their operating status can change during severe weather. The following locations are among those designated for emergency activation: Caboolture: Council Depot Car Park, 98 Beerburrum Road Narangba: 910 Oakey Flat Road, between Raynbird Road and Sovereign Drive Deception Bay: SES, 2–22 Old Bay Road Petrie: 3 Woonara Drive Arana Hills: SES, 2 Pine Hills Drive, off Jinker Track Margate: Jull Street, opposite the council depot Bongaree: Bribie Island SES, 208 First Avenue Beachmere: Rogers Street Sports Ground, 57 Rogers Street Other designated locations are in Dayboro, Elimbah, Toorbul and Woodford, which has two collection sites. The council's indexed station register displayed all 13 locations as closed during this research. However, its live dashboard map could not be independently checked, so the current operating status of individual sites remains unconfirmed. Residents should consult the Moreton Bay Disaster Dashboard before leaving home. Operating locations are identified by green shovel icons, while activated stations are generally available around the clock until supplies run out. What residents need to bring Brisbane's regular collection points provide pre-filled sandbags. Moreton Bay's activated stations operate differently, with residents required to fill their own bags using sand supplied by the council. Moreton Bay advises bringing a shovel, gloves, enclosed shoes, string or zip-ties, and spare empty bags. Council provides polypropylene bags when available, but supplies may run out. Sandbags should be filled no more than two-thirds full to make them easier to carry and position. Queensland SES advises leaving the tops untied when laying the bags, although they may be secured for transport. Collection limits and assistance arrangements at individual stations have not been independently confirmed. Before You Collect Sandbags Check before travelling. Stations may close or run out of supplies. Never walk or drive through floodwater. Brisbane: Five established storm-season collection points provide pre-filled bags under published 24-hour arrangements. Stock is not guaranteed. Moreton Bay: Stations open only when activated. Morayfield and Burpengary Hit by Intense Rain as Flooding Disrupts Moreton Bay

Caboolture Today — Thu, 22 Oct 2026 01:06:32 +0000

This is a developing story. Information is based on official warnings and reports as of press time. Road conditions, school arrangements and emergency warnings may change throughout the day. Morayfield and Burpengary were caught in an intense morning downpour that brought flash flooding across northern Moreton Bay, disrupting travel and putting local creek crossings under renewed pressure. On Thursday, 22 October, the Bureau of Meteorology recorded 128 mm at Sheep Station Creek in Morayfield, 127 mm at Burpengary's Mathew Cr gauge and 131 mm at Short Street in Caboolture during the three hours to 6:45 a.m. A severe thunderstorm warning issued at 7:02 a.m. warned of locally intense rainfall capable of causing dangerous, life-threatening flash flooding. Flooding affects roads and local services Floodwaters disrupted roads across Moreton Bay, with reports of difficult access around Morayfield's shopping precinct and interruptions to regional bus services. School closures were also reported during the morning, although individual reopening arrangements could not be independently confirmed. City of Moreton Bay also warned that flooding and road closures were affecting waste collection services. Residents were advised to leave their bins out where safe, with collections to be completed when practical. Council asked affected households not to lodge missed-collection reports while the disruption continued. The precise status of individual roads in Morayfield and Burpengary remained subject to change. Council's Disaster Dashboard and QLDTraffic provide road and emergency information, while families can check the Queensland school closure service for updates. Read: Severe Storm Brings Flooding, Hail, and Roof Collapses in Morayfield Local creeks carry a history of flooding Sheep Station Creek drains parts of Morayfield within the Caboolture River catchment, while Burpengary Creek and Little Burpengary Creek run through neighbouring communities. Intense rainfall can produce rapid rises in waterways and cause flooding where runoff collects around low-lying streets and crossings. Morayfield residents have seen the consequences before. In January 2024, floodwater rushed through Morayfield Shopping Centre's car park, while a grocery delivery truck became stranded in water nearby. The incident disrupted a familiar destination for shoppers and commuters. Council's flood mapping identifies river flooding, creek flooding and overland flow as separate hazards. Floodwater can affect local roads even where nearby homes remain above river flood levels. Drainage works target vulnerable infrastructure Morayfield's William Berry Drive has undergone a staged rehabilitation programme, with the final section completed in October 2026. Stage 3B included stormwater drainage upgrades, pavement reconstruction and resurfacing, completing a wider programme of road improvements. In Burpengary East, Council awarded a $1.48 million culvert contract in 2020 for Old Bay Road, near properties numbered 486 and 499. The approved design called for 14 smaller pipes to be replaced with 10 larger box culverts and about 140 metres of roadway to be raised. The project's objective was to improve the road's flood immunity from less than a one-year event to a 10-year event. The original construction schedule anticipated approximately 19 weeks of work, but the final completion date has not been independently confirmed. Other stormwater projects have focused on water quality and erosion. At Beech Drive Park in Morayfield, around 28,000 plants were established within a constructed wetland, while Crendon Street Park in Burpengary received a naturalised channel with sediment basins and habitat ponds. Neither project's published treatment targets establish a measured reduction in flood levels. .bson-flood-box { border: 1px solid #cbd5e1; border-radius: 10px; background: #f8fafc; padding: 22px; margin: 24px 0; color: #172033; font-family: inherit; } .bson-flood-box h3 { margin: 0 0 18px; font-size: 21px; line-height: 1.3; } .bson-flood-item { padding: 13px 0; border-bottom: 1px solid #d6dce5; } .bson-flood-item:last-of-type { border-bottom: 0; } .bson-flood-item strong { display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; font-size: 16px; } .bson-flood-item p { margin: 0; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.55; } .bson-flood-note { font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.5; color: #475569; margin-top: 14px; } @media (max-width: 600px) { .bson-flood-box { padding: 15px; margin: 18px 0; } .bson-flood-box h3 { font-size: 18px; } .bson-flood-item p { font-size: 14px; } } Flood Mitigation Works in Morayfield and Burpengary William Berry Drive, Morayfield Stormwater drainage and road upgrades. In a statement on 22 October, Council said the overnight rainfall significantly exceeded earlier forecasts, which had remained below its operational threshold for activating sandbag stations. Council was reviewing sandbag requirements while responding to flooded roads. Residents were urged to monitor the Moreton Bay Disaster Dashboard for refuge locations and emergency updates, and register for Moreton Alert to receive weather warnings by SMS, email or voice message. Emergency help and sandbag information Council lists the Caboolture Depot car park at 98 Beerburrum Road as a designated sandbag location. Activation should be confirmed before travelling, as listed facilities are not necessarily operating during every weather event. Bribie Island Bridge Redesign Makes Way For Walkers, Cyclists And Four Traffic Lanes

Caboolture Today — Wed, 21 Oct 2026 04:27:20 +0000

The existing Bribie Island Bridge could become a dedicated crossing for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility device users under a new design that would shift all vehicle traffic onto a four-lane bridge across Pumicestone Passage. Read: Pull On Your Boots: Line Dancing Night Planned at Buddy Brewing in Burpengary The preferred design, released on 18 October 2026, proposes building a new bridge immediately north of the current crossing between Sandstone Point and Bongaree. Rather than dividing traffic between two bridges, as previously proposed, the new structure would accommodate four traffic lanes with road shoulders, doubling the crossing's current traffic capacity. The existing bridge, which has connected Bribie Island to the mainland for about six decades, would remain in place for walking, cycling and mobility access, with its future features still open for community input. Artist's ImpressionPhoto Credit: Department of Transport and Main Roads Changes On Both Sides Of The Passage The bridge proposal extends to surrounding roads, with Caboolture–Bribie Island Road proposed to be widened to four lanes between Bestmann Road East and Benabrow Avenue. Two through lanes would operate in each direction, alongside changes to nearby intersections. At Sandstone Point Hotel, the preferred design includes new traffic signals with pedestrian crossings, a longer right-turn lane into the property and a dedicated left-turn lane for vehicles leaving. Changes are also planned for the Sylvan Beach Esplanade intersection on the island side. Mr Brooke Savige said breakdowns and accidents on the existing bridge could cause hours of delays for people travelling to work or accessing services. “Not only is this a major inconvenience but it’s a serious safety issue,” Mr Savige said. The new crossing would stand up to four metres higher than the existing bridge near the navigation channel. The design is intended to improve traffic reliability, emergency access and connections between Bribie Island and the mainland. Artist's ImpressionPhoto Credit: Department of Transport and Main Roads A Second Life For The Old Bridge The proposal would give the existing bridge a different purpose, creating a separate route across Pumicestone Passage for people travelling on foot, by bicycle or using mobility devices. Mr Peter Flannery welcomed the revised design, noting its alignment with the council's earlier planning work. “It is pleasing to see Council’s own planning and design solution for the Bribie Island Bridge has been accepted as a feasible way forward,” Mr Flannery said. While the bridge's future use has been outlined, the Department of Transport and Main Roads is still seeking suggestions on its features. An interactive feedback map allows people to identify locations where improvements could be considered, alongside a survey covering community priorities and the proposed active transport connection. Artist's ImpressionPhoto Credit: Department of Transport and Main Roads Suggestions will be assessed against safety, technical, environmental and funding requirements, meaning not every proposed feature will necessarily form part of the final design. Community consultation also covers environmental considerations, including proposed amendments to the Marine Parks (Moreton Bay) Zoning Plan 2019 and arrangements for the project works area. The project remains in the detailed design stage, following completion of its business case in December 2025 and the awarding of a design contract in January 2026. Ground and seabed investigations are scheduled to begin during the week of 19 October to help inform further design work and environmental assessments. Construction dates and an updated project cost have not been announced. Read: Morayfield East Childcare Centre Could Reopen in November After Edge Closure Two information sessions will give people an opportunity to examine the plans and speak with the project team. The first will be held at Bribie Island RSL Club, 99 Toorbul Street, Bongaree, on Thursday 5 November, followed by an outdoor session at the corner of Benabrow Avenue and Sylvan Beach Esplanade on Saturday 14 November. Both sessions will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feedback can also be submitted through the Bribie Island Bridge Upgrade consultation website until 11:59 p.m. on Friday 27 November 2026. Morayfield East Childcare Centre Could Reopen in November After Edge Closure

Caboolture Today — Mon, 19 Oct 2026 06:39:57 +0000

A Morayfield East childcare centre closed during Edge Early Learning's restructuring could resume operations in early November, with Little Locals Early Learning announcing plans to take over the former service. Read: Caboolture Farmer Showcase Follows Longer Wamuran Strawberry Season Little Locals outlined its intentions on 15 October 2026, a day after the centre was due to close under the Edge administration process. The operator said it was working through regulatory and property arrangements, including the transfer of the childcare service licence, and hoped to reopen within approximately three weeks. The prospective reopening could restore childcare at the premises and provide employment opportunities for former educators. Little Locals has expressed an intention to rehire as many former team members as possible, although staffing arrangements and an opening date remain unconfirmed. According to the operator, discussions involving the Department of Education and the landlord are continuing. Short notice leaves families searching for care The closures followed Edge Early Learning's entry into voluntary administration on 25 August 2026. Craig Shepard, David Johnstone and Stacey Clisby of KordaMentha were appointed to review the business and assess its future. At the beginning of the process, families were advised that centres would continue operating as usual while the review was underway, with no immediate changes to childcare arrangements, staffing or opening hours. However, administrators subsequently identified 11 centres without viable offers to continue operating. Seven were in Queensland, three in South Australia and one in the ACT. Some parents learnt of the closures with less than 48 hours' notice, while others were reportedly informed when dropping off their children. KordaMentha said affected families were being directed towards nearby childcare services that had indicated some availability for new enrolments at the time. Administrator David Johnstone acknowledged the impact on staff and families required to make alternative arrangements at short notice. Proposed sales offer continuity for 53 centres While the 11 centres closed, administrators announced proposed sale arrangements covering 53 other Edge Early Learning services across Queensland and South Australia. Goodstart Early Learning agreed to acquire 31 centres, while another 22 were covered by agreements or term sheets involving six other operators. Montessori Academy's agreement to acquire nine services, comprising six in Queensland and three in South Australia, formed part of the latter group. The transactions were announced as part of efforts to preserve childcare services and employment across the network. Outstanding conditions and completion requirements meant the proposed agreements did not necessarily represent finalised ownership transfers. Operating costs put pressure on childcare providers The closures come amid wider concerns about operating costs and enrolment levels across Australia's childcare sector. Australian Childcare Alliance national vice-president Nesha Hutchinson said industry reports indicated average childcare occupancy of approximately 73 per cent. Operators still face rent and staffing expenses when centres have unfilled places, creating financial pressure on some services. Read: What Happens When A Childcare Incident Is Reported Late? The industry-wide occupancy figure does not establish the enrolment levels or financial position of any individual Edge centre. Administrators said the 11 facilities were closing after viable offers to continue their operations could not be secured. Published 15-Oct-2026

Margate Food Outlet Helps Redcliffe Families Stretch Grocery Budgets

Redcliffe Today — Wed, 21 Oct 2026 05:50:28 +0000

A food outlet in Margate is providing Redcliffe Peninsula households with access to discounted groceries, free food assistance and everyday essentials, offering an alternative for residents struggling to meet their weekly shopping costs. Read: Homeless Charity Issues Urgent Call for Support in Redcliffe Kingdom Makers Food Outlet operates at 251 Oxley Avenue, having moved from North Lakes in late 2025. Although the not-for-profit service has been established for several years, its operators say many residents remain unaware of the affordable groceries and assistance available at its Margate premises. Everyone can shop at the outlet without becoming a member. A one-off $3 membership provides additional benefits, including access to free bread and fresh produce when available with a purchase. Residents experiencing more immediate financial hardship may also be able to obtain short-term emergency food hampers. Grocery savings ease pressure on families The outlet serves people facing different financial circumstances, from parents managing household expenses to older residents and those experiencing unemployment or homelessness. Senior Pastor Alexia Fruean, who helps run the food service, has described customers arriving with very different needs. Some are seeking basic assistance during difficult circumstances, while others are working parents looking for affordable meat and bulk groceries to make their money go further. A volunteer recalled a mother of seven who was able to use money saved on groceries for an outing with her children. Lower food expenses had allowed the family to spend on something beyond everyday necessities. Food affordability remains a widespread concern. According to Foodbank Queensland's 2025 research, approximately 480,000 Queensland households, or 22 per cent, experienced food insecurity during the preceding 12 months. Coast Guard Redcliffe Marks 53 Years Before Historic Transition

Redcliffe Today — Mon, 19 Oct 2026 01:38:21 +0000

Coast Guard Redcliffe is preparing to celebrate 53 years of volunteer marine rescue on Moreton Bay, inviting local families to explore its Scarborough base and discover the history of a service about to enter a new chapter under Marine Rescue Queensland. Read: Scarborough Boat Harbour Master Plan Set to Transform Local Community The Community and Family Day will take place on Sunday, 25 October 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., ahead of the flotilla's planned transition in November. The celebration will include rescue vessel demonstrations, guided tours, a historical exhibition and the launch of a book documenting more than five decades of service. A boating tragedy that brought Redcliffe volunteers together Coast Guard Redcliffe traces its beginnings to a fatal boating accident off Scarborough during the Easter holidays of 1973. The tragedy prompted local residents to consider establishing a dedicated marine rescue organisation, drawing on Coast Guard services already operating elsewhere in Queensland. The first official meeting was held at the Scarborough Marine Centre on 30 July 1973, with G. Sorley elected as the inaugural flotilla leader. The newly formed organisation began with limited resources, operating from a caravan before acquiring its own rescue vessel. Its first vessel, a Nova 1700 powered by a 115-horsepower motor, cost $3,600 and was officially launched in December 1976. A permanent base and operations centre followed in May 1983, replacing the temporary facilities that had supported the volunteers during their first decade. The flotilla also built its own rescue vessel in the early 1990s. Members contributed 3,978 hours of voluntary labour to construct a Hydrofield boat, which was launched in July 1992. The milestones are recorded in the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard's official history. Five decades of rescues and volunteers remembered Photographs, rescue accounts and maritime memorabilia will form part of a historical exhibition covering Coast Guard Redcliffe's development from 1973 to 2026. The exhibition will open alongside the commemorative book Guardians of the Bay: A History of Coast Guard Redcliffe 1973–2026, documenting the vessels, volunteers and events that have shaped the organisation. Founding members, former volunteers and current crews are expected to attend the celebration, including Roy King, whom organisers identify as an active volunteer with 53 years of service. QF3 Commander Ray Pearce will address the gathering and reflect on the flotilla's history and contribution to the community. The anniversary will also recognise the families and supporters who have helped sustain the volunteer organisation across generations. Scarborough base opens for rescue vessel tours Visitors will have an opportunity to see parts of Coast Guard Redcliffe's operations that are normally associated with emergency responses on Moreton Bay. Base and rescue vessel tours are scheduled from 12:40 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., offering access to operational equipment, the radio room and rescue facilities. Volunteers will be available to explain their work and share experiences from their time with the organisation. An on-water parade and rescue vessel demonstrations are planned for 1:00 p.m., giving spectators a chance to watch the crews manoeuvre their vessels on Moreton Bay. A rescue helicopter demonstration is also being considered for 1:30 p.m., although organisers have advised that its appearance will depend on availability. The official programme begins at 12:15 p.m., followed by the historical exhibition and book launch at 12:30 p.m. Photo Credit: Google Maps Marine rescue continues under a new organisation Coast Guard Redcliffe's anniversary comes as Queensland's volunteer marine rescue network undergoes a major restructure. The Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association and Marine Rescue Queensland reached an agreement in May 2026 for all 21 Coast Guard flotillas operating across the state to progressively join the unified service. The arrangement is designed to bring marine rescue operations under a single, government-funded organisation while retaining volunteer participation and local rescue expertise. Redcliffe's transition is expected in November, according to the anniversary organisers, although an exact commencement date has not been announced in the official material reviewed. Several Coast Guard flotillas have already completed the change, including Redland Bay and Brisbane's Manly-based unit. The latter became MRQ Manly on 19 September 2026, with its existing volunteer crews continuing to operate from their local base. Marine Rescue Queensland has identified continuity of rescue services, volunteer support and local engagement as priorities throughout the transition. Redcliffe families invited to anniversary celebration The Community and Family Day will be held at the Coast Guard Redcliffe base on Thurecht Parade, Scarborough, on Sunday, 25 October, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Residents, boating families and former volunteers are invited to attend, view the historical displays, meet rescue crews and explore the vessels that serve the Moreton Bay community. That is the plan for Boots & Boogie, set for Saturday, 24 October, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Webb Hall, Redcliffe Showgrounds. Tickets are $27.78, according to the event listing. Each routine is taught in small, easy steps, so newcomers can keep up without feeling lost. The session ends with a group dance that pulls everything together. Come as You Are Mistakes are part of the fun, according to Sami Fisher, owner of The Active Sisters. She told Moreton Daily that guests do not need to know the steps, bring a dance partner or nail every move. Laughing along and trying something new matters more. The night is open to friends, couples and work crews, and men are welcome. Dress-ups are encouraged, so boots, denim and cowboy hats will fit right in. From Margate Studio to Showground Photo Credit: The Active Sisters/ Facebook The idea grew from the group’s first line dancing classes in Margate. Moreton Daily reported in August that the classes ran as a four-week series for beginners and experienced dancers, in a studio built around women’s fitness. Fisher said the response surprised the team, and that it was lovely to see women gather, laugh and try something different. That reaction convinced the group to take the dancing out into the wider community. Kippa-Ring Sewer Upgrade and Peninsula Smoke Testing Put Wastewater Network in Focus

Redcliffe Today — Wed, 14 Oct 2026 00:50:14 +0000

Work is underway on a major wastewater upgrade in Kippa-Ring, while a separate testing programme across the Redcliffe Peninsula is helping Unitywater identify faults that can put extra pressure on the sewerage network during heavy rain. Residents across the Redcliffe Peninsula may see two different types of wastewater work taking place over the coming months. One involves new pipes and improvements to a pumping station on Hercules Road in Kippa-Ring. The other uses artificial smoke to find faults in sewer pipes and private plumbing connections that can allow rainwater into the wastewater system. Read: Redcliffe Eyes Future Growth with Comprehensive Urban and Transport Plans Although the projects are separate, both form part of Unitywater's efforts to maintain reliable services as established neighbourhoods age and new developments add to demand. At Hercules Road, the utility is upgrading an existing gravity wastewater main and pump station, installing approximately 400 metres of new pipe and constructing new maintenance holes. The improvements are intended to support new developments in Kippa-Ring, Newport, Rothwell and Morayfield South. Unitywater Executive Manager Sustainable Infrastructure Solutions Mike Basterfield said the project was among several upgrades being delivered across Moreton Bay. "The works also include an upgrade to the gravity wastewater main and pump station on Hercules Road, including 400 metres of new pipe and new maintenance holes. This upgrade will support new developments in Newport, Rothwell, Kippa Ring and Morayfield South," he said. Construction on the first stages of the wider wastewater upgrade programme began in September 2026, with work continuing across different locations until June 2027. When Rainwater Finds Its Way into Sewer Pipes While the Hercules Road project focuses on upgrading infrastructure, Unitywater's smoke-testing programme is designed to identify problems in the existing wastewater network. During heavy rainfall, stormwater can enter sewer pipes through damaged infrastructure, faulty connections or incorrectly connected drainage. That additional water can overwhelm parts of a system designed primarily to carry wastewater from homes and businesses. Photo credit: Supplied To find potential entry points, crews introduce non-toxic artificial smoke into sections of the sewer network. Where smoke escapes through a damaged pipe, faulty fitting or other opening, it can indicate a location requiring further investigation. Unitywater announced on 12 October that its annual testing programme was underway across Moreton Bay, including Kippa-Ring, Rothwell, Redcliffe, Margate, Clontarf, Scarborough and Woody Point. According to Unitywater, approximately 4,000 defects in private plumbing connections have been identified across Moreton Bay over the past five years, with 85 per cent rectified. Mr Basterfield said the repairs had helped reduce the amount of stormwater entering the wastewater network. "Across Moreton Bay 85% of these defects have been rectified, which has reduced stormwater inflow by 24%, which reduces the likelihood, frequency and volume of overflows occurring," he said. The figures relate to the wider Moreton Bay testing and rectification programme, rather than to Kippa-Ring or the Redcliffe Peninsula alone. .rt-wastewater { box-sizing: border-box; width: 100%; margin: 28px 0; padding: 24px 26px; background: #f7f8fa; border-left: 5px solid #73182c; border-radius: 0 8px 8px 0; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #263443; } .rt-wastewater * { box-sizing: border-box; } .rt-wastewater h3 { margin: 0 0 19px; color: #0b2540; font-size: 22px; line-height: 1.3; font-weight: 700; } .rt-wastewater h4 { margin: 0 0 9px; color: #73182c; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.35; font-weight: 700; } .rt-wastewater .rt-section { padding: 0 0 19px; } .rt-wastewater .rt-section + .rt-section { padding: 19px 0 0; border-top: 1px solid #dce1e6; } .rt-wastewater .rt-section:last-child { padding-bottom: 0; } .rt-wastewater p { margin: 0 0 10px; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.6; } .rt-wastewater p:last-child { margin-bottom: 0; } .rt-wastewater strong { color: #0b2540; } @media (max-width: 600px) { .rt-wastewater { padding: 19px 17px; margin: 22px 0; } .rt-wastewater h3 { font-size: 20px; } .rt-wastewater h4 { font-size: 17px; } .rt-wastewater p { font-size: 15px; } } Two Wastewater Programmes on the Redcliffe Peninsula Hercules Road infrastructure upgrade Location: Kippa-Ring Upgrades to a wastewater main and pump station, approximately 400 metres of new pipe and new maintenance holes. Purpose: Support new development in Kippa-Ring, Newport, Rothwell and Morayfield South. Timing: Part of the wider construction programme running from September 2026 to June 2027. Wastewater smoke testing Locations: Kippa-Ring, Rothwell, Redcliffe, Margate, Clontarf, Scarborough and Woody Point. Crews use non-toxic artificial smoke to identify faults that allow rainwater to enter the sewerage system. Purpose: Help reduce wastewater overflows during heavy rain. Timing: 2026–27 testing programme. Affected residents will receive approximately two weeks' advance notice. What Happens if Smoke Testing Finds a Problem? The smoke-testing programme has already uncovered thousands of plumbing faults across Moreton Bay, many of which property owners may not have known existed. According to Unitywater, approximately 4,000 defects in private plumbing connections have been identified during the programme's first five years. These include incorrectly installed or poorly maintained overflow relief gullies, which are designed to prevent sewage backing up inside buildings, and downpipes illegally connected to the wastewater system. About 85 per cent of those defects have since been rectified, contributing to a reported 24 per cent reduction in stormwater entering the wastewater network across Moreton Bay. The investigations extend beyond household plumbing. During the last financial year, Unitywater inspected 14,600 maintenance holes, looking for problems such as loose covers and tree roots that can cause blockages or allow stormwater into sewer pipes. For residents in Clontarf, Kippa-Ring, Margate, Redcliffe, Rothwell, Scarborough and Woody Point, smoke testing will continue over the coming 12 months. Photo credit: Supplied The artificial smoke is safe, non-toxic and non-staining. It is introduced into wastewater pipes and becomes visible where it escapes through vents, cracks or faulty connections, helping crews identify locations that may need further investigation. Residents do not need to be home during testing and can expect a letter in their mailbox approximately two weeks before crews arrive. If a fault is identified in private plumbing, Unitywater says it will ask the customer to take reasonable steps to have the problem rectified. The testing is particularly important during heavy rainfall, when excess stormwater entering sewer pipes can increase the risk of wastewater overflowing onto private properties or into the surrounding environment. For residents, the distinction matters. The Hercules Road project involves construction to improve wastewater infrastructure, while smoke testing is an inspection process that may identify problems in existing pipes or private plumbing. Unitywater says properties selected for smoke testing will generally receive at least 14 days' advance notice. The testing does not require access inside homes and is not expected to interrupt wastewater services. The utility has not provided specific traffic arrangements or a separate completion date for the Hercules Road construction in its latest announcement. Its delivery partner, Abergeldie, is undertaking the wider upgrade works, which are expected to finish in June 2027. Read: Dolphins Pitch Kippa-Ring Precinct Upgrade Ahead of Brisbane 2032 Unitywater's broader five-year infrastructure programme involves $2 billion in water and wastewater investment across Moreton Bay, the Sunshine Coast and Noosa. That is a region-wide commitment, not the cost of the Kippa-Ring project. As the peninsula accommodates further development, the two programmes illustrate the work involved in maintaining the network from different directions: adding capacity where it is needed while finding faults that can undermine the performance of infrastructure already in the ground. Clontarf Home Near Waterfront Sells for $675,000 Despite Extensive Renovation Needs

Redcliffe Today — Fri, 09 Oct 2026 00:39:08 +0000

A Clontarf property just five houses from the waterfront has sold for $675,000, well below the suburb's median house price, with extensive renovations and an unresolved granny flat certification issue among the challenges facing its new owners. Read: World Cup Trophy Lands In Redcliffe As Kayo Stadium Prepares For Global Stage The property at 9 Thomas Street recorded a sale on 3 October 2026 through Ray White Redland Bay. Occupying a 594-square-metre block, it was marketed to renovators, builders and developers interested in restoring the existing house or exploring rebuilding options. Three-bedroom house marketed as a renovation project The original Ray White advertisement described a house requiring significant work, with its location near Pelican Park, Hornibrook Esplanade and the Ted Smout Memorial Bridge among its selling points. Photo Credit: Ray White Redland Bay The main residence has three bedrooms upstairs, alongside a kitchen, living area, bathroom and sunroom. Downstairs are a garage, laundry, second bathroom and multipurpose storage area. The property also includes solar panels, a garden shed and water tank. Although advertised as a four-bedroom property, the fourth bedroom is located in a separate, partly completed granny flat. The agency also disclosed that the property had undergone a general clean-up. Granny flat certification remains an obstacle The partly completed granny flat contains a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living area, but requires retrospective certification. According to the Ray White listing, the seller had made enquiries and understood that obtaining certification to satisfy local authority requirements was extremely unlikely. The disclosure reflects the seller's understanding rather than a confirmed decision by the relevant authority. Photo Credit: Ray White Redland Bay Property.com.au also identifies flood-related planning overlays affecting the address. The City of Moreton Bay provides property-specific flood reports to help establish planning requirements for future building work, although the property's individual flood conditions have not been independently verified through an official report. Sale price sits $390,000 below Clontarf's house median Clontarf's median house price reached $1.065 million in the 12 months to September 2026, representing annual growth of 17 per cent. Four-bedroom houses recorded a median of $1.15 million across 28 sales. The Thomas Street property sold for $390,000 below the overall house median, although its extensive repair requirements and partly completed outbuilding limit direct comparisons with other homes. Recent nearby sales include a two-bedroom house at 55 Thomas Street, which fetched $880,000 in September, and a three-bedroom property at 9 Kabura Street, which sold for the same amount in August. First recorded sale in more than two decades The property last changed hands for $385,000 on 17 November 2004, according to its recorded sales history. Its latest $675,000 sale represents a $290,000 increase over the intervening period, without accounting for changes in the property's condition or other ownership costs. World Cup Trophy Lands In Redcliffe As Kayo Stadium Prepares For Global Stage

Redcliffe Today — Wed, 07 Oct 2026 21:06:04 +0000

A 24-karat gold-plated World Cup trophy has arrived at Kayo Stadium, giving Redcliffe an early glimpse of the international softball tournament that will transform the Dolphins’ home ground next April. Read: How Redcliffe Locals Fought For A Rail Line And Won The WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Finals will bring eight nations to Moreton Bay from 5 to 10 April 2027, with Australia’s Aussie Spirit facing Japan, the United States, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Puerto Rico, Mexico and China. The tournament will be the first Women’s Softball World Cup staged in Australia since the inaugural event in 1965. The trophy was unveiled at Kayo Stadium on Tuesday, 7 October, in front of current and former Australian players, local junior softballers and government and sporting representatives. Made in Italy from gold-plated brass, it will return to the same venue in April to be presented to the 2027 world champions. Photo Credit: City of Moreton Bay/Facebook From Rugby League Turf To A World Cup Diamond Kayo Stadium will undergo an unusual sporting conversion for the six-day tournament, with the NRL ground to be turned into an international softball diamond. The change puts a global event in a venue better known as the Dolphins’ home base, while nearby Talobilla Park will remain part of tournament operations as a warm-up facility. The park had originally been earmarked to host the World Cup before the event was shifted to Kayo Stadium. Mr Peter Flannery has described the tournament as the biggest sporting event the city has hosted. Visiting teams, supporters and officials are expected to bring activity beyond the stadium, with organisers and government representatives forecasting more than $3.65 million flowing into the Queensland economy and benefits for tourism operators, businesses and local jobs. Photo Credit: City of Moreton Bay/Facebook Organisers are also chasing a benchmark inside the ground. Softball Australia hopes a crowd of 10,000 for a match could establish a new attendance record for the tournament. Australia will have more than a world title at stake. The Redcliffe finals are the first qualifying event for softball at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, where five teams will join host nation the United States. Redcliffe Hosts While 2032 Venue Hunt Continues The tournament also arrives while softball and baseball pursue places on the Brisbane 2032 Olympic program, with the question of where the two sports could be staged still unresolved. Kayo Stadium can accommodate an international softball field but does not have enough playing space for baseball. The Gabba is expected to be used for cricket in 2032, while the Brisbane Showgrounds has been ruled out as an option because of security requirements around the adjacent athletes’ village. Photo Credit: City of Moreton Bay/Facebook Mr Tim Mander has said another potential site has been identified, but neither the government nor Baseball Australia has disclosed its location. Baseball Australia has indicated several venue solutions could be presented to Brisbane 2032 organisers. Read: Free Festival of Frights Brings Stilt Walkers, Fairies and Street Food to Redcliffe A separate proposal has emerged in Logan for a privately funded, purpose-built ballpark at Griffith University, although Mander said it was not yet part of Brisbane 2032 planning. Redcliffe will get the first test much sooner. General public tickets for the 2027 Women’s Softball World Cup Finals go on sale from 1pm AEST on Thursday, 8 October, ahead of Kayo Stadium’s switch from rugby league field to World Cup diamond next April. How Redcliffe Locals Fought For A Rail Line And Won

Redcliffe Today — Wed, 07 Oct 2026 12:30:48 +0000

The railway may have opened in 2016, but the fight to bring trains to the Redcliffe Peninsula had been running for more than a century. Community campaigners and local representatives continued pushing for the project through decades of studies, proposals and political commitments. Read: Ten Years of Trains, 131 Years in the Making One of those campaigners was Maxwell Barton OAM, whose involvement in the push for a railway began in 1977. He will share his experience at a Redcliffe Museum event marking 10 years since the opening of the Redcliffe Peninsula Rail Line. Mr Barton chaired the RAIL 009 - It’s Time for the Line campaign, which he described as a non-aligned community campaign that helped turn political promises into reality. The campaign grew into a regional issue, with the project affecting a number of electorates between Redcliffe and Petrie. Mr Barton said the campaign was an example of how people power could be used to effect change. His comments will form part of the Redcliffe Museum event, which will revisit the lengthy campaign behind the railway. A Campaign Spanning Generations Photo credit: CC BY-SA 4.0/ QRtrains/Wikimedia Commons The push for a railway had a long history before the RAIL 009 campaign emerged. Redcliffe’s first proposed route dates back to 1885, while the 1960s saw the then Redcliffe City officials included provision for rail access in its master town plan. Renewed interest in urban public transport during the 1970s brought fresh hope for the project. The Rails to Redcliffe Committee was established, followed by further investigations, including a 1979 engineering study to identify land required for a potential rail corridor. Land was eventually secured for a rail corridor during the 1980s, but further planning and studies followed. Redcliffe City joined the push to establish the rail line in 2005. Political commitments followed in the years before construction began. In 2009, then Queensland Premier Anna Bligh made a pre-State election commitment to support the project, while the 2010 Federal election saw both the Government and Opposition pledge $740 million towards the railway. Petrie Railway Station (Photo credit: CC BY-SA 3.0/TravellerQLD/Wikimedia Commons) The first sod was turned in late 2013. On 3 October 2016, the first train travelled the 12.6km Redcliffe Peninsula Rail Line between Kippa-Ring and Petrie. A decade after the railway opened, the campaign behind the push for the line will be revisited at Redcliffe Museum. Mr Barton will offer insights into the project’s 131-year journey from concept to reality. Read: 10 Years Since Redcliffe Peninsula Railway Finally Arrived Decades of community lobbying helped keep the push for a rail connection on the agenda through successive studies, proposals and political commitments. The railway's eventual arrival marked the end of a campaign that had been pursued by Redcliffe advocates across generations. Published 7-October-2026

Sandgate Retirees Turn $48,000 Bitcoin Investment Into Nearly $500,000

Sandgate News — Fri, 16 Oct 2026 00:41:13 +0000

A Sandgate couple who invested $48,000 in Bitcoin during retirement eventually made almost half a million dollars, transforming their financial circumstances after years of limited superannuation savings. Read: Brisbane Dentist Behind Smilo.ai Wins Queensland Pearcey Award Terry and Justine Sanders purchased the cryptocurrency in 2019 and cashed out four years later, in 2023. Speaking publicly about their experience in May 2025, the couple described how the investment had changed their retirement, despite their initial unfamiliarity with digital currencies. Retirement savings take an unexpected turn Terry said their savings had been running low and their superannuation had never amounted to much. He compared the Bitcoin gains with the modest returns from their superannuation and a bank account paying 2 per cent interest. The couple reported making almost $500,000 after selling their holdings, although the published account did not establish the precise sale proceeds, net profit or applicable taxes. Justine, who was 79 when interviewed, described the outcome as life-changing. Their involvement in cryptocurrency also surprised people their own age. Justine said they had told very few of their peers about the investment because those who knew about it questioned their judgement. Neither had been particularly comfortable with the technology at first. Terry acknowledged that they had gradually improved their skills, although their grandchildren remained considerably more proficient. Cryptocurrency attracts more older investors The Sanders couple are among a growing number of older Australians who have entered the cryptocurrency market, despite its history of sharp price movements. Research by cryptocurrency exchange Independent Reserve found that the proportion of surveyed Australians aged over 65 who had owned cryptocurrency rose from 2 per cent in 2019 to 8.2 per cent in 2025. The findings were based on an annual survey of approximately 2,000 Australians. A subsequent 2026 survey by Independent Reserve estimated that 33 per cent of Australians had owned cryptocurrency, compared with 31 per cent in its 2025 findings. Bitcoin, the best-known cryptocurrency, is traded through digital platforms rather than traditional savings accounts. Its value is driven by market demand and can fluctuate dramatically, creating opportunities for large gains alongside the possibility of substantial losses. Photo Credit: Wikipedia/Edwin Images/CC 4.0 Big returns carry serious financial risks The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has warned that cryptocurrency can be particularly risky for retirees who depend on their savings to cover living expenses. ASIC commissioner Alan Kirkland explained in 2025 that cryptocurrency prices could rise quickly but could also collapse, leaving older investors with limited opportunities to rebuild their savings. The regulator's Moneysmart guidance identifies crypto assets as high-risk investments and warns of limited consumer protections, market volatility and the potential loss of invested funds. Fraudulent investment platforms present another danger. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's Scamwatch service warns that scammers may use false promises of high returns, fabricated account balances and pressure tactics to persuade people to transfer money. Read: Shorncliffe Line Is the Pilot Route for Queensland’s New Train Signalling as Railbus Swaps Continue Terry recognised those dangers despite his own financial success. He acknowledged that people over 65 could face particular difficulties recovering from major investment losses because they generally had fewer working years ahead of them. Published 16-Oct-2026

ADHD Isn't Always Obvious: What Parents and Adults Should Know

Sandgate News — Tue, 20 Oct 2026 07:05:11 +0000

A child who quietly struggles to follow instructions. An adult who works twice as hard to stay organised. A parent who begins recognising their own lifelong difficulties after their child is assessed. ADHD can look very different from the stereotypes many people associate with the condition, and understanding those differences may help families recognise when to seek support. When I speak with people about attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), one of the misconceptions I encounter is that it always involves a restless child who cannot sit still. In reality, ADHD can present in many different ways. It can affect attention, planning, organisation, impulse control and the ability to manage everyday responsibilities. Some of these difficulties are readily noticeable, while others can remain hidden for years. Australian clinical guidelines estimate that ADHD affects approximately 6–10 per cent of children and adolescents and 2–6 per cent of adults. In Brisbane, I think the proportion of young people who have symptoms, may need further assessment, and those who have ADHD, could be as high as 35 per cent. As a GP and Medical Director at Telos Medical Centre in Brighton, I believe one of the most important things families can understand is that ADHD does not always look the way we expect it to. When Coping Becomes Exhausting Some adults with ADHD become remarkably good at finding ways around their difficulties. They may depend on multiple reminders, work late into the night to meet deadlines or maintain strict routines because they worry about forgetting something important. To colleagues, friends and even family members, they may appear organised, productive and entirely in control. But what others cannot see is how much effort it takes to maintain that appearance. We sometimes call this masking — when someone conceals or compensates for difficulties so they are less apparent to other people. Masking is not unique to ADHD, and not everyone with ADHD experiences it. For those who do, however, constantly trying to keep everything together can be exhausting. I find it particularly important to explore how people have managed their responsibilities over time, rather than looking only at how well they appear to be functioning today. Someone may have coped reasonably well through school or early adulthood, only to find things increasingly difficult after starting university, taking on a demanding job, becoming a parent or assuming greater responsibilities. Sometimes, the demands of life simply become greater than the coping strategies a person has developed. Executive Dysfunction: When Everyday Tasks Become Difficult Another aspect of ADHD that I think deserves greater understanding is executive dysfunction. Executive functions are the mental processes that help us plan, organise, prioritise, manage time and follow through on tasks. Imagine knowing that an important bill needs to be paid, having the money available and fully understanding the consequences of missing the deadline — yet somehow continuing to put it off. Or sitting down to begin a work project, knowing exactly what needs to be done, but finding it extraordinarily difficult to take the first step. For some people with ADHD, this gap between knowing what to do and being able to do it can affect almost every part of daily life. It may mean repeatedly running late, forgetting appointments, struggling to complete household tasks or becoming overwhelmed when several responsibilities compete for attention. Over time, these difficulties can affect relationships, financial wellbeing, career opportunities and self-confidence. When people do not understand why these things keep happening, they may begin questioning their own abilities. Figuring Out Why Part of the explanation lies in how the brain regulates attention, motivation and the ability to act on our intentions. Photo credit: Discover Your Path Dopamine is one of the chemical messengers involved in these processes. Alongside noradrenaline and other brain systems, it plays a role in how we respond to rewards, sustain attention and manage everyday tasks. ADHD is more complicated than simply having too little dopamine. However, differences in these systems can help explain why someone may find an interesting or urgent task relatively easy to complete, yet struggle to begin something routine, even when they understand its importance. This is why I encourage people to look beyond labels such as lazy, careless or unmotivated. Sometimes, what appears to be a lack of effort is a genuine difficulty with the processes that help us turn intentions into actions. However, I always emphasise that executive-function difficulties are not exclusive to ADHD. Poor sleep, anxiety, depression and other health conditions can produce similar experiences. That is why a comprehensive assessment is so important. We need to understand the whole person, not simply identify a collection of symptoms. .adhd-criteria-panel, .adhd-criteria-panel * { box-sizing: border-box; } .adhd-criteria-panel { width: 100%; max-width: 100%; margin: 24px 0; padding: 21px 23px; background: #f8f6f1; border: 1px solid #e2ddd5; border-left: 4px solid #73182c; border-radius: 5px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #263442; overflow-wrap: break-word; } .adhd-criteria-panel .adhd-criteria-title { margin: 0 0 12px !important; padding: 0; color: #0b2540 !important; font-size: 21px !important; font-weight: 700; line-height: 1.35; } .adhd-criteria-panel p { margin: 0 0 11px !important; color: #263442 !important; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 1.6; } .adhd-criteria-panel strong { color: #0b2540; font-weight: 700; } .adhd-criteria-panel a { color: #73182c !important; text-decoration: underline; text-underline-offset: 3px; font-weight: 600; } .adhd-criteria-panel a:hover, .adhd-criteria-panel a:focus { color: #0b2540 !important; } .adhd-criteria-panel .adhd-criteria-list { display: grid; grid-template-columns: repeat(2, minmax(0, 1fr)); column-gap: 24px; row-gap: 8px; margin: 12px 0 17px !important; padding: 0 !important; list-style: none !important; } .adhd-criteria-panel .adhd-criteria-list li { position: relative; min-width: 0; margin: 0 !important; padding: 0 0 0 17px !important; color: #263442; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5; } .adhd-criteria-panel .adhd-criteria-list li::before { content: ""; position: absolute; top: 9px; left: 0; width: 6px; height: 6px; background: #73182c; border-radius: 50%; } .adhd-criteria-panel .adhd-criteria-advice { margin-top: 15px; padding-top: 14px; border-top: 1px solid #d9d3cb; } .adhd-criteria-panel .adhd-criteria-subtitle { margin: 0 0 8px !important; padding: 0; color: #73182c !important; font-size: 17px !important; font-weight: 700; line-height: 1.4; } .adhd-criteria-panel .adhd-criteria-advice p:last-child { margin-bottom: 0 !important; } @media (max-width: 650px) { .adhd-criteria-panel { padding: 18px 16px; margin: 20px 0; } .adhd-criteria-panel .adhd-criteria-title { font-size: 20px !important; } .adhd-criteria-panel .adhd-criteria-list { grid-template-columns: minmax(0, 1fr); gap: 7px; } .adhd-criteria-panel .adhd-criteria-list li { font-size: 15px; } } Could It Be ADHD? When to Consider an Assessment Clinicians consider 18 recognised ADHD symptoms: nine relating to inattention and nine to hyperactivity and impulsivity. Examples include losing things, difficulty organising tasks, forgetfulness, persistent restlessness, interrupting others and difficulty waiting. Under the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria used in Australia , children up to age 16 generally need at least six symptoms in either symptom group. For people aged 17 and older, the threshold is five symptoms in either group. Symptom counts alone are not enough. The difficulties must: Persist for at least six months. Be inconsistent with the person's developmental stage. Have been evident in some form before age 12. Occur in at least two settings, such as home, school or work. Interfere with everyday functioning. Not be better explained by another condition. When is it worth seeking advice? If persistent difficulties with attention, organisation, impulsivity or restlessness are affecting work, studies, relationships or home life, consider seeking a professional assessment. These signs do not necessarily mean you have ADHD. Assessment considers other possible explanations alongside medical and developmental history. Why a Child’s Assessment Can Raise Questions for Parents One of the interesting things about ADHD is its strong genetic component. Sometimes, when parents begin learning about ADHD during their child's assessment, they recognise experiences from their own childhood. They may remember struggling to finish schoolwork, losing belongings, finding it difficult to concentrate or needing much more effort than their classmates to stay organised. They may have developed ways of coping without ever considering that ADHD could be involved. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition, which means symptoms begin during childhood, although a person may not receive a diagnosis until adulthood. Of course, recognising similarities between yourself and your child does not automatically mean you both have ADHD. But it can be a useful starting point for a conversation with a healthcare professional, particularly when those difficulties have persisted over many years and continue to affect daily life. The Signs in Children Aren’t Always Loud Photo Credit: Facebook/Telos Medical Centre When parents think about ADHD, they often picture a child who is constantly moving, interrupting conversations or struggling to remain seated. Those behaviours can certainly be associated with ADHD, but they are not the only signs. Some children have predominantly inattentive symptoms. They may be quiet, frequently daydream, miss parts of instructions or struggle to complete tasks even when they understand what is expected. Others may regularly lose school materials, forget everyday routines, find it difficult to wait their turn or struggle to manage frustration. I encourage parents to look for patterns rather than isolated incidents. All children become distracted, restless or forgetful at times. What matters is whether these difficulties are persistent, greater than would be expected for the child's developmental stage and affecting everyday life across different settings. A child may experience difficulties at home that are also apparent to teachers at school. Importantly, good academic results do not necessarily rule out ADHD. Some children perform well in class but expend considerable effort managing their attention, organisation and schoolwork. We should not assume that a child is coping comfortably simply because their grades are good. It's Never Too Early to Ask for Help If parents are concerned about their child's attention, behaviour or development, my advice is not to wait until those concerns become serious problems before seeking guidance. Seeking help early does not mean rushing into a diagnosis or medication. For younger children, the first steps may involve discussing developmental concerns, learning practical strategies to support behaviour and routines, or working with early childhood educators. A formal ADHD diagnosis may be more difficult to establish in very young children, and not every developmental concern will turn out to be ADHD. Nevertheless, parents can seek professional advice whenever they notice persistent difficulties affecting their child's wellbeing or development. Early support can help families better understand a child's needs and respond to challenges before they begin affecting learning, friendships or confidence. .adhd-faq-box { width: 100%; max-width: 100%; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 28px 0; padding: 24px; background: #f8f9fb; border: 1px solid #dce2e8; border-left: 5px solid #73182c; border-radius: 10px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #263442; } .adhd-faq-box, .adhd-faq-box * { box-sizing: border-box; } .adhd-faq-box h3 { margin: 0 0 10px; color: #0b2540; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.3; font-weight: 700; } .adhd-faq-intro { margin: 0 0 20px; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.65; } .adhd-faq-box details { margin: 0 0 9px; background: #fff; border: 1px solid #dce2e8; border-radius: 7px; overflow: hidden; } .adhd-faq-box summary { display: flex; align-items: center; justify-content: space-between; gap: 14px; padding: 15px 17px; color: #0b2540; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 700; line-height: 1.45; cursor: pointer; list-style: none; } .adhd-faq-box summary::-webkit-details-marker { display: none; } .adhd-faq-box summary::after { content: "+"; flex-shrink: 0; color: #73182c; font-size: 24px; font-weight: 400; line-height: 1; } .adhd-faq-box details[open] summary::after { content: "−"; } .adhd-faq-box details[open] summary { border-bottom: 1px solid #e8ebef; background: #fdfafb; } .adhd-faq-box summary:hover { background: #f6f3f5; } .adhd-faq-box summary:focus-visible { outline: 3px solid #73182c; outline-offset: -3px; } .adhd-faq-answer { padding: 15px 17px 17px; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.7; overflow-wrap: break-word; } .adhd-faq-answer p { margin: 0; } @media (max-width: 600px) { .adhd-faq-box { padding: 17px 13px; margin: 22px 0; } .adhd-faq-box h3 { font-size: 21px; } .adhd-faq-box summary { padding: 14px 12px; font-size: 15px; } .adhd-faq-answer { padding: 13px 12px 15px; font-size: 15px; } } Preparing for an ADHD Assessment Whether you're seeking advice for yourself or your child, a little preparation can help make the first appointment more productive. Here are some common questions families have before an assessment. What information should I prepare? Write down examples of difficulties with attention, organisation, impulsivity or completing tasks. Include when they occur and how they affect school, work, home life or relationships. Are childhood school reports important? They can be helpful, even for adults. ADHD symptoms begin in childhood, so old reports, family recollections and teacher observations may help establish a developmental history. Should I bring information from teachers or family members? Yes, where available. Observations from people who know the individual in different settings can provide useful context. Ask the clinic beforehand what information it prefers. What medical information should I bring? Details of current medications, previous assessments, sleep difficulties, relevant medical conditions and family history can help the clinician consider possible explanations for symptoms. Will an assessment automatically lead to medication? No. An assessment does not guarantee an ADHD diagnosis or a medication prescription. Treatment recommendations depend on individual needs and clinical findings. What should I ask when booking? Confirm the assessment process, appointment length, expected costs, Medicare eligibility, whether further consultations may be required and what ongoing care is available. For older children and adults, an ADHD assessment generally involves looking at current symptoms, developmental history and the impact of those symptoms on everyday life. We may also consider information from family members, teachers, previous school reports or other relevant records. One thing I want people to understand is that there is no single blood test or brain scan that can confirm ADHD. Diagnosis involves a careful clinical assessment, including consideration of other medical, developmental or psychological conditions that could explain similar symptoms. Why Access to Local ADHD Care Matters For many families, deciding to seek an ADHD assessment is only the first hurdle. Finding an appropriately qualified clinician, arranging appointments and understanding the likely costs can also be challenging. Waiting times vary considerably between providers and locations. Where specialist services have lengthy waiting lists, the delay can leave families trying to manage difficulties at home, school or work without a clear explanation or support plan. I believe access to care closer to home can make a meaningful difference, particularly because ADHD assessment and management may involve more than one appointment. A local clinic can make it easier for parents to fit consultations around school and work, and for adults to attend follow-up appointments without extensive travel. It may also help maintain continuity of care, allowing the treating clinician to monitor progress, discuss concerns and adjust a management plan where appropriate. Accessibility and Cost At Telos Medical Centre Brighton, we aim to provide an accessible pathway for people seeking ADHD-related care. Some patients may establish a stable management plan within several appointments, although the time required depends on individual circumstances. More complex presentations can require additional investigations, specialist input or longer-term follow-up. The priority should always be a thorough assessment and appropriate care, rather than simply reaching a diagnosis quickly. Cost is another consideration for families and adults exploring an ADHD assessment. At Telos Medical Centre Brighton, indicative initial assessment fees are $300 for children and $500 for adults. Subsequent appointments may be bulk-billed for eligible patients, while standard adult follow-ups are approximately $45 out of pocket. Fees, Medicare eligibility and the number of appointments required can vary, so patients should confirm the expected costs and inclusions before booking. Finding Support Close to Home Queensland's ADHD prescribing arrangements changed in December 2025, expanding the role of appropriately qualified specialist GPs in initiating and managing certain ADHD medications for adults, subject to specific requirements. These changes are helping create additional pathways for people who need assessment and ongoing care. Telos Medical Centre in Brighton. Photo Credit: Facebook/Telos Medical Centre At Telos Medical Centre in Brighton, we provide ADHD-related assessment and management services for children and adults. My approach is to understand each person's individual circumstances, including their developmental history, everyday challenges and broader health needs. Treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Depending on the individual, it may involve education, behavioural strategies, psychological support, medication where appropriate and ongoing monitoring. Not everyone diagnosed with ADHD will require the same treatment, and receiving a diagnosis does not automatically mean taking medication. What matters is finding an approach that helps the person function better in their daily life and supports their overall wellbeing. For parents wondering whether their child's difficulties deserve closer attention, or adults who have spent years trying to understand their own experiences, I hope the message is reassuring. ADHD is not always obvious, and it can affect people in different ways. Asking questions, recognising patterns and seeking appropriate guidance can be the beginning of a better understanding of yourself or someone you care about. .anchita-profile, .anchita-profile * { box-sizing: border-box; } .anchita-profile { width: 100%; max-width: 100%; margin: 30px 0; padding: 24px; background: #f9f7f3; border: 1px solid #e2e2e2; border-left: 4px solid #73182c; border-radius: 9px; box-shadow: 0 3px 12px rgba(11,37,64,.07); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #263442; overflow-wrap: break-word; } .anchita-profile-layout { display: flex; flex-direction: row; align-items: flex-start; gap: 24px; width: 100%; } .anchita-profile-photo { display: block; width: 165px; height: 165px; flex: 0 0 165px; object-fit: cover; object-position: center top; border-radius: 6px; } .anchita-profile-content { flex: 1 1 0; min-width: 0; } .anchita-profile h3 { margin: 0 0 5px; padding: 0; color: #0b2540; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.3; font-weight: 700; } .anchita-profile-role { margin: 0 0 13px; color: #73182c; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5; font-weight: 600; } .anchita-profile-bio { margin: 0; color: #263442; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.7; font-weight: 400; } @media (max-width: 650px) { .anchita-profile { padding: 20px 17px; margin: 24px 0; } .anchita-profile-layout { flex-direction: column; align-items: center; gap: 15px; } .anchita-profile-photo { width: 155px; height: 155px; flex: none; } .anchita-profile-content { width: 100%; } .anchita-profile h3 { font-size: 22px; text-align: center; } .anchita-profile-role { font-size: 14px; text-align: center; margin-bottom: 14px; } .anchita-profile-bio { font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.7; text-align: left; } } About Dr Anchita Karmakar General Practitioner and Medical Director, Telos Medical Centre Brighton Dr Anchita Karmakar is a General Practitioner and Medical Director at Telos Medical Centre Brighton. Dementia and Home Fire Safety: When a Smoke Alarm Isn't Enough

Sandgate News — Mon, 12 Oct 2026 04:43:23 +0000

According to Dementia Australia, an estimated 446,500 Australians are living with dementia in 2026, and that number is projected to exceed one million by 2065. For families caring for a parent, partner or loved one, keeping them safe at home involves plenty of everyday considerations. One that can easily be overlooked is what happens if a fire breaks out. Most of us know what a smoke alarm means. We hear it, recognise the danger and understand that we need to get out. For someone living with dementia, however, that familiar sound may cause confusion rather than prompt an immediate response, particularly if they are woken suddenly in the middle of the night. Hearing loss and reduced mobility can complicate matters further. Someone may not hear the warning clearly or may need assistance to reach an exit, even in a home they have lived in for decades. Families supporting older relatives often spend considerable time thinking about medication, mobility and preventing falls. Fire safety deserves a place in those conversations too, especially when a person's needs are changing. The Risks Behind the Numbers An Australian study examining 900 preventable residential fire deaths between 2003 and 2017 found that nearly 47 per cent of those who died had at least one identified disability. When researchers excluded cases where disability status could not be established, that proportion rose to approximately 62 per cent. Although the findings cover a broad range of disabilities rather than dementia alone, they raise an important consideration for households: a working smoke alarm is only one part of keeping people safe. Someone must also be able to recognise the danger and respond, which may be difficult when memory, hearing or mobility is affected. Cathy Brand, CEO of Australian fire-safety company Brooks Australia, says household protection needs to reflect the abilities of the people living there. “An alarm only works if the person can actually hear it, see it and understand what it means. For someone living with dementia, that’s not always the case,” Ms Brand says. When a Familiar Sound Becomes Confusing Dementia affects people differently, and the changes are not always obvious. Someone who manages comfortably during the day may struggle with an unexpected alarm or decisions that need to be made quickly. An alarm sounding overnight can be especially disorienting. Even a person who knows the layout of their home may become uncertain about which way to go, while someone with hearing difficulties might miss the warning altogether. Fire-safety technology offers additional ways to alert people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Interconnected smoke alarms activate together when one detects smoke, allowing a warning to reach other parts of the home without waiting for smoke to spread to each detector. Compatible systems can also incorporate flashing strobe lights or vibrating pads placed beneath pillows, providing another way to alert someone who may not hear an audible alarm. Brooks Australia is among the manufacturers offering these options, including visual alert accessories and bedside vibration systems. Ms Brand sums up the value of interconnection simply: “You want the warning travelling through the house faster than the smoke.” While these devices can help people receive a warning, they cannot necessarily overcome the confusion or difficulty interpreting danger that some people with dementia experience. Families therefore need to consider how a person is likely to respond, as well as how they will be alerted. Making the Escape Plan Fit the Person Families often adjust a home gradually as an older relative's needs change. Loose rugs are removed, bathroom handrails installed and furniture rearranged to make moving around easier. Fire safety deserves the same attention, particularly when someone may need help leaving the house quickly. Ms Brand encourages families to approach an escape plan much as they would fall prevention. “We’d also encourage families to think about a fire escape plan the same way they’d think about a fall prevention plan — walk through it together, practice it, and make sure it's realistic for the person’s current abilities, not the abilities they had five years ago,” she says. For someone using a walking frame, that could mean ensuring hallways remain clear and doors can be opened easily. In other households, the greater concern may be whether a person will recognise an exit or remember what to do when frightened. Overnight arrangements deserve particular thought, including who could provide assistance if someone cannot evacuate independently. Rehearsing an escape route can help, but a plan should not depend entirely on a person with dementia remembering instructions during an emergency. Small Changes Worth Making Now A home fire-safety review need not involve major renovations. Testing smoke alarms, checking their age and location, clearing escape routes and keeping combustible materials away from heaters and cooking areas are sensible starting points. Where someone has hearing loss, visual or vibrating alerts may provide an additional warning. Households supporting someone with dementia or significant mobility limitations may also benefit from discussing their arrangements with carers, relevant health professionals or qualified fire-safety installers. There is a timely reason for Queensland homeowners to review their existing alarms. From 1 January 2027, the final stage of the state's smoke-alarm reforms will apply to remaining domestic dwellings, including existing owner-occupied homes. Required alarms must be interconnected and installed in prescribed locations, including every bedroom and relevant hallways. Meeting those requirements provides an important foundation, although families may need additional measures depending on who lives in the home. A Conversation Before It Becomes an Emergency As Australia's dementia population grows, more families will face the challenge of helping loved ones remain safe while preserving as much independence as possible. Fire safety belongs in that conversation, alongside the everyday adjustments that make a home easier and safer to live in. “We want families, carers and aged care providers to feel empowered to have this conversation early, rather than waiting for a near miss to prompt change,” Ms Brand says. For families, a useful starting point is to walk through the home together, check the alarms and consider what would happen if a fire started while everyone was asleep. The important question is whether the people living there would have the warning, understanding and assistance they need to get out safely. Published 9-Oct-2026

Concerns Resurface Over Sewage Releases into Cabbage Tree Creek

Sandgate News — Wed, 07 Oct 2026 09:30:26 +0000

Concerns about sewage entering Cabbage Tree Creek have resurfaced after figures showed more than 713 million litres were released during the 2024–25 financial year. The figure has renewed attention on sewage bypasses from the Sandgate treatment plant and how those releases are managed. Read: Brighton Waterway Gets Help from Oysters The total of 713,178,660 litres was calculated by the Stop Raw Sewage Into SEQ Waterways campaign from 32 Sandgate bypass records it said were provided by Urban Utilities. A recent video from the campaign again highlighted the figure and its concerns about sewage releases into local waterways. The campaign has been raising concerns about sewage releases across South East Queensland, with Cabbage Tree Creek among the areas under scrutiny. Questions Over Sewage Releases Photo credit: Google Maps/Marty Supreme The figures have raised questions about the frequency of the bypasses and the circumstances in which they occur. They have also renewed attention on the infrastructure used to treat sewage before it is discharged. Cr Jared Cassidy has previously raised concerns about the figures and the broader scale of the issue. He said sewage bypasses can occur when systems are overwhelmed during extreme weather, while planned maintenance can also involve authorised releases. The campaign has also called for greater attention to sewage discharges and previously sought answers from the Premier and State Environment Minister about their management. The issue has remained a focus for residents concerned about Cabbage Tree Creek. Water Quality Monitoring Photo credit: Google Maps/Jamie Munro Cabbage Tree Creek is subject to regular water-quality monitoring, providing information about conditions in the waterway. Brisbane City monitors water quality at 11 highly used recreational sites across the Brisbane River and sections of Moreton Bay, including Cabbage Tree Creek. The monitoring program checks levels of enterococci, bacteria used to measure microbial contamination. Testing at Cabbage Tree Creek occurs fortnightly during summer and monthly during the cooler months, according to Brisbane City. Brisbane City said through its website that monitoring results indicate the levels of bacteria present when a sample is taken and can vary daily. Its guidance advises people to avoid contact with waterways during and after heavy rainfall, while its current information specifically advises against entering waters during or up to three days after heavy rainfall. Read: The River That Refused to Become a Dam: Rafting Tasmania’s Franklin River The sewage-release figures and water-quality monitoring provide different information for residents following conditions in Cabbage Tree Creek. The 713-million-litre figure has placed the local waterway back under scrutiny, with ongoing questions about the frequency of sewage bypasses and how releases into the waterway are managed. Brisbane Dentist Behind Smilo.ai Wins Queensland Pearcey Award

Sandgate News — Mon, 12 Oct 2026 06:50:30 +0000

After years of treating dental patients, Dr Padma Gadiyar wanted to find a way to identify oral health problems before they became more difficult to manage. Her response was Smilo.ai in Sandgate, an artificial intelligence platform that has now earned the Brisbane dentist the 2026 Queensland Pearcey ICT Entrepreneur Award. Read: Dementia and Home Fire Safety: When a Smoke Alarm Isn’t Enough Founded in 2019, Smilo.ai uses smartphone technology to support dental screening and monitoring outside traditional appointments. Dr Gadiyar received the award on Tuesday, 6 October, at The Beetson Hotel in Petrie Terrace, with Queensland Minister for Customer Service and Open Data and Minister for Small and Family Business Steve Minnikin presenting the honour. Photo Credit: Dr Padma Gadiyar/LinkedIn A Dental Check Without The Dentist's Chair Smilo.ai began with a problem Dr Gadiyar had encountered in clinical practice: patients struggling with the cost, accessibility and continuity of dental care, sometimes leaving concerns unaddressed until treatment became more complicated. The platform allows users to capture images of their teeth and gums using a smartphone, with artificial intelligence helping screen for potential problems. It also supports ongoing monitoring, allowing changes in oral health to be recorded between dental visits. Rather than replacing dentists, the technology is intended to help people recognise concerns earlier and seek appropriate professional advice. Smilo.ai also offers virtual dental consultations in Australia, extending access to dental guidance beyond face-to-face appointments. Dr Gadiyar has since broadened the company's focus beyond individual patients to aged care, disability support and chronic disease management. Photo Credit: Dr Padma Gadiyar/LinkedIn In aged care settings, the technology is designed to help nurses and carers document changes in residents' oral health, including concerns involving teeth, gums and dentures. Screening information can then assist with monitoring, care planning and referrals when professional dental attention is needed. The longer-term aim is to make oral health monitoring part of wider healthcare services, rather than treating dental concerns separately from other ongoing health needs. Photo Credit: Dr Padma Gadiyar/LinkedIn From Treating Patients To Building Technology The Pearcey Foundation's judges considered Dr Gadiyar's transition from clinical dentistry into technology entrepreneurship, alongside Smilo.ai's clinical validation, regulatory approval, patent protection and commercial progress. Queensland Pearcey Foundation Chair Rebecca McDonald acknowledged the strong field of nominees across different technology sectors. Dr Gadiyar's clinical background and development of a platform addressing oral healthcare access were among the factors recognised by the panel. Read: Concerns Resurface Over Sewage Releases into Cabbage Tree Creek During 2026, Smilo.ai expanded into additional healthcare settings and continued fundraising for further development. Research supporting the company's work has also received funding through the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Medical Research Future Fund. The Queensland Pearcey ICT Entrepreneur Award recognises mid-career technology entrepreneurs who have taken commercial risks and contributed to the state's technology sector. Dr Gadiyar will represent Queensland at the Pearcey National Awards in Canberra on 2 December 2026. Published 7-October-2026

Migratory Shorebirds Return to Boondall Wetlands Ahead of Aussie Bird Count

Sandgate News — Sun, 11 Oct 2026 08:36:31 +0000

Migratory shorebirds have returned to the tidal flats at Boondall Wetlands, where birdwatchers are being encouraged to observe local birdlife as part of the annual Aussie Bird Count. Read: Shorncliffe Line Is the Pilot Route for Queensland’s New Train Signalling as Railbus Swaps Continue The nationwide event, organised by BirdLife Australia, runs from 19 to 25 October 2026 during National Bird Week. Participants are asked to spend 20 minutes recording the birds they see, with observations contributing to research on Australia's urban bird populations. Jenny Carey, president of Keep Sandgate Beautiful Association (KSBA), said the return of migratory shorebirds to the wetlands' tidal flats offered another reason to explore the area's birdlife. Photo Credit: BirdLife Australia/YouTube Birdwatching Around Boondall Wetlands Boondall Wetlands is among several locations identified for the count, alongside freshwater lagoons, the Sandgate foreshore and Peace Park. Backyards, school grounds and local parks can also be used, allowing participants to record birds in familiar surroundings. Carey encouraged people across the area to spend time observing the variety of birds found nearby, whether along the waterfront or closer to home. Mr Adrian Schrinner also identified Boondall Wetlands as one of Brisbane's places to experience nature and wildlife, encouraging people to use the national count as a reason to explore their surroundings. Birdwatching requires little preparation for beginners. Binoculars are not essential, and participants who cannot identify a particular bird can use the identification features available through the Aussie Bird Count app and website. Birds Queensland vice-president Dr Scott Fox said observing birds could offer a break from busy daily routines. He also pointed to research connecting birdwatching with improvements in mental health and wellbeing. Photo Credit: BirdLife Australia/YouTube Bird Counts Help Track Population Changes BirdLife Australia describes the Aussie Bird Count as the country's largest citizen science event, attracting tens of thousands of participants each year. Observations collected during the week help researchers monitor urban bird populations, including changes in how frequently familiar species are reported. The organisation's previous counts have consistently placed the Rainbow Lorikeet at the top of the national rankings for 10 consecutive years. Other commonly reported species include the Australian Magpie, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Superb Fairy-wren, Willie Wagtail and Tawny Frogmouth. However, earlier national results have also raised concerns about some smaller urban birds. BirdLife Australia has reported declining trends for Superb Fairy-wrens, while Willie Wagtail reporting rates have fallen across major Australian cities except Perth. Read: Concerns Resurface Over Sewage Releases into Cabbage Tree Creek The findings form part of the broader national picture rather than a specific assessment of bird populations at Boondall Wetlands. Participants can complete more than one count throughout the week, with each 20-minute observation submitted separately through the app or online form. Registration and further information are available at aussiebirdcount.org.au. Published 6-October-2026

Shorncliffe Line Is the Pilot Route for Queensland's New Train Signalling as Railbus Swaps Continue

Sandgate News — Sat, 03 Oct 2026 22:38:48 +0000

Shorncliffe line passengers are living alongside the pilot run of a digital signalling system that is also being installed in Brisbane's Cross River Rail tunnels. Read: How Sandgate’s Henry Meyer Became Part Of A Larger Queensland Story A Pilot Line With Bigger Plans Photo Credit: Cross River Rail Cross River Rail calls the Shorncliffe line the pilot for the European Train Control System, known as ETCS. The technology is being installed in stages on key parts of the South East Queensland network, including the Cross River Rail tunnels and the Gold Coast line between Beenleigh and Varsity Lakes. Four partners share the job: the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Hitachi, the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority and Queensland Rail. Why does the pilot matter? Cross River Rail says testing on this line confirms the system meets safety rules and operating needs before tunnel testing can begin. From Test Runs to Weekend Passengers Testing has moved past the stage of running trains with no one on board. Rail Express reported in September that customers had ridden ETCS Level 2 trains for the first time, on shuttle services between Northgate and Shorncliffe over a series of weekends. Cross River Rail says those weekend shuttles run from mid-September to late 2026, so anyone travelling further has to change trains at Northgate. The new system swaps conventional trackside signals for equipment on the train itself. It sends near real-time updates on each train's position, direction and speed to the Rail Management Centre, and thousands of hours of testing have already been logged on this line. The October Closures Photo Credit: Cross River Rail On closure evenings, Railbus R348 takes over between Northgate and Shorncliffe from 7:45 p.m. until the last service. The railbus stops at every station along that stretch, which covers Bindha, Banyo, Nudgee, Boondall, North Boondall, Deagon and Sandgate as well as Shorncliffe. Trains keep running between Northgate and Roma Street during these closures. Queensland Rail's October notice lists the evening closures for 5-8, 12, 14-15, 19-21 and 26-29 October. The weekend of 24 and 25 October, needs a closer look. Queensland Rail's notice describes railbuses between Northgate and Shorncliffe. Translink, however, lists that weekend as a wider closure across the Caboolture, Redcliffe Peninsula, Shorncliffe and Sunshine Coast lines. It runs from the first service on Saturday to the last on Sunday, with the first normal train on Monday, 26 October. Travellers heading anywhere north of Brisbane that weekend should check the Translink journey planner for their exact trip. Read: Who Was Ted Smout? The Sandgate Man Behind the Bramble Bay Bridge What Neighbours May See and Hear Photo Credit: Cross River Rail Living near the tracks means a few changes around the neighbourhood. Test trains may travel and stop between Bindha and Shorncliffe stations, even though they are not in service. Noise is part of the package too. Traffic control crews setting up and packing down, train movements, horns, light vehicles and workers on site all add to it, and the railbuses put extra vehicles on local roads. Traffic control will be in place at the Adams Street, Kennerley Street, Curlew Street and Palm Avenue level crossings, and at the Nudgee pedestrian crossing on the city side of Nudgee station. The testing can't happen around passenger services, which is why the closures fall in the evenings and on weekends. Queensland Rail also says more construction staff may be seen around the corridor and stations. Planning Your Trip Dates can shift, because the testing program is complex. Queensland Rail suggests checking the Translink app or website, or calling 13 12 30, before heading out. It says further closures will continue on the line throughout 2026, with details shared ahead of each testing period. When will it all wrap up? The sources don't give an end date for the Shorncliffe line work. Queensland Rail says it understands closures are a hassle and thanks the community for its patience. Published Date 02-October-2026

Queensland Insurance Report Revisits Bracken Ridge's Devastating 2022 Flood Year

Bracken Ridge News — Fri, 16 Oct 2026 02:22:14 +0000

Bracken Ridge recorded Queensland's highest number of home insurance claims linked to extreme weather during the devastating 2022 floods, according to newly released data examining five years of storm damage across the state. Read: Bracken Ridge Yards Targeted in Suburban Wastewater Blitz The Suncorp Insurance analysis, released in October 2026, examined more than 126,000 home claims lodged between the 2021–22 and 2025–26 financial years. Bracken Ridge led Queensland in 2021–22, when extraordinary rainfall and widespread flooding affected Southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales. Six days of exceptional rainfall across Brisbane The 2022 flood disaster followed one of Brisbane's most intense periods of sustained rainfall, with several consecutive days of heavy downpours overwhelming waterways and drainage systems. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane recorded 792.8 millimetres of rain between 23 and 28 February 2022, equivalent to 78 per cent of its average annual rainfall at the official city gauge. The city's February rainfall reached 887 millimetres, making it the second-wettest February on record after 1893. Daily totals exceeded 200 millimetres on three consecutive days from 26 to 28 February, an unprecedented sequence in Brisbane's historical rainfall records. Saturated catchments and sustained heavy rain contributed to widespread river, creek and flash flooding across the region. The exceptional conditions coincided with the financial year in which Bracken Ridge topped Suncorp's claims ranking, although the insurer did not publish a separate breakdown of flood, wind or storm claims for the suburb. As It Happened in 2022 Cabbage Tree Creek remains part of local flood monitoring Bracken Ridge forms part of the wider Cabbage Tree Creek catchment, which extends through Brisbane's northern suburbs towards the coastal lowlands around Deagon and Sandgate. The suburb is included in Brisbane's Greater Deagon flood alert area, alongside Deagon, Sandgate and Taigum. The Brisbane Severe Weather Alert network provides access to local flood monitoring information, including creek conditions during periods of heavy rainfall. Flood exposure differs considerably between individual properties according to elevation, drainage and proximity to waterways. Inclusion in the catchment or alert area does not mean every Bracken Ridge home is exposed to creek flooding. Bracken Ridge hosts flood insurance support The scale of the 2022 disaster prompted the insurance industry to organise face-to-face community meetings across Queensland as households dealt with damaged properties and insurance claims. Bracken Ridge Tavern was selected as the Brisbane North venue for an Insurance Council of Australia meeting scheduled for 15 June 2022. The event was intended to give flood-affected policyholders an opportunity to discuss their claims with insurers, raise concerns and obtain information about the recovery process. Similar sessions were arranged in Gympie, Maryborough, Forest Lake and Ipswich. The Insurance Council also identified delays involving building supplies and contractors among the difficulties facing flood-affected households across Queensland. By September 2022, the Insurance Council reported that the February–March disaster had generated more than 233,000 claims and approximately $5.28 billion in insured losses across affected regions. Bracken Ridge's ranking gives way to other hotspots Bracken Ridge's position at the top of Queensland's 2021–22 claims ranking was followed by a succession of severe weather events affecting other parts of the state. Maryborough led the insurer's records in 2022–23, followed by Gympie in 2023–24 and Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast in 2024–25. Manly West became Queensland's leading hotspot in 2025–26. Suncorp Executive General Manager Home Insurance Anna Cartwright said the latest analysis demonstrated how quickly the concentration of claims could change between communities following major weather events. The rankings cover Suncorp Insurance and AAMI customers rather than all Queensland households. No suburb-specific claims total was published for Bracken Ridge, and its absence from the top position in subsequent years does not establish that its weather-related risks have diminished. Read: The Men’s Breakfast in Fitzgibbon: A Monthly Gathering Every Man Should Experience Where residents can check their flood risk Bracken Ridge homeowners can access Brisbane's FloodWise Property Report service to check available flood information for their address, including relevant flood levels and hazards where modelling exists. Brisbane's Severe Weather Alert network also provides information on local flood monitoring, while residents can prepare for future heavy rainfall by checking gutters, downpipes and drainage around their properties. Murrumba Downs Tully’s Trek Honours Maddie Lawrence With 3,433 Laps

Bracken Ridge News — Wed, 21 Oct 2026 03:15:53 +0000

A fundraising walk in Murrumba Downs has seen participants complete 3,433 laps in memory of Lawnton Girl Guide Madeline ‘Maddie’ Lawrence, with the event enabling a $7,000 donation to cancer charity Dreams2Live4. Read: Queensland Insurance Report Revisits Bracken Ridge’s Devastating 2022 Flood Year The inaugural Tully’s Trek, held on 29 August, brought together members of Girl Guides Queensland’s Brisbane North and Glasshouse Regions to remember Maddie, affectionately known as Tully, who died following a battle with cancer. Inspired by Relay for Life, the event involved sponsored laps to raise money for Dreams2Live4 and the newly established Tully’s Fund, which aims to help Guiding members continue participating when difficult circumstances place a financial strain on them. From 104 Laps To A Head-Shaving Fundraiser Among the participants was Olivia, who completed 104 laps, while Tayla raised $700 to become the highest individual walker fundraiser. Jasmin, who had been an Olave alongside Maddie, also contributed through a head-shaving fundraiser. Her GoFundMe campaign raised $2,086 from 38 donations towards a $2,500 target, supporting both Dreams2Live4 and the fund established in Maddie’s memory. The day extended beyond the walking track, with face painting, friendship bracelet making, games, a photo booth and craft activities bringing participants together between laps. Organisers acknowledged the contributions of walkers, donors and volunteers, along with support from All Occasion by Nic, In2Adventure and Sunshine Coast First Aid Volunteers. Photo Credit: GoFundMe The Young Guide Behind The Name Tully Maddie’s connection with Guiding began at five years old when she joined 3rd Lawnton Brownies, where she attended her first camp. She later progressed to 1st Lawnton Guides and Glasshouse Synergy Olaves, building friendships and taking part in camps, challenges and leadership activities. Her original Guiding name was Tullawong, meaning magpie. When she began leadership training at 18, fellow members shortened the name to Tully, which remained her nickname within the organisation. As a Junior Leader, Maddie helped organise activities and encouraged younger Guides as they developed their skills. She continued participating in Guiding while living with terminal cancer and attended her final camp at 23. According to Jasmin’s fundraising campaign, Maddie died in 2025 from a rare melanoma. During her cancer journey, Dreams2Live4 helped Maddie fulfil a wish for a family holiday on a farm. The experience was later shared by Burpengary Girl Guides when encouraging donations to Tully’s Trek. Read: Tully’s Trek To Honour Lawnton Guide Maddie Lawrence The charity supports eligible people living with advanced cancer and certain other serious cancer diagnoses by helping them pursue personal dreams. Maddie’s involvement in Guiding also shaped the creation of Tully’s Fund, which will support members facing financial hardship due to medical circumstances. Money raised for the fund will help cover membership fees, camps and activities, allowing young people and adult members experiencing difficult circumstances to remain involved in Guiding. Bracken Ridge CPR Awareness Gives Locals A Skill That Matters When Seconds Count

Bracken Ridge News — Tue, 06 Oct 2026 05:35:36 +0000

Bracken Ridge CPR awareness lands on 3 October, and it is the sort of event that deserves a closer look. It is not flashy nor does not try to be. It simply offers something useful, and that is often the best kind of community event. Read: New Housing Rules Boost Capacity Along Brisbane Northside Rail Corridor There is nothing abstract about it either. Bracken Ridge CPR awareness points straight at a basic truth. Emergencies do not wait for a tidy moment. They turn up in the middle of ordinary life, usually when nobody feels ready. That is why this session matters. Most people want to help in a crisis. The problem is not kindness. It is hesitation. People freeze. They second-guess themselves. They worry about getting it wrong. A simple, local session can chip away at that fear. Photo Credit: Unsplash/MartinSplitt Confidence before panic That is the real value of Bracken Ridge CPR awareness. It is not just about technique. It is about confidence. CPR awareness gives people a first step, and that first step can change the whole shape of an emergency. Bracken Ridge is the sort of suburb where that message makes sense. Life moves in a familiar rhythm. Parents juggle school runs. Kids head to sport. Older residents keep an eye on neighbours. People go about their days expecting them to stay normal. Then one day, they do not. That is where practical knowledge matters. A CPR session does not promise miracles. It promises readiness. That may sound simple, but simple is often what people need when the pressure hits. Bracken Ridge CPR awareness does that by putting a life-saving skill into the hands of everyday people. It is the kind of learning that stays tucked away until the day it is needed. And that is what gives it weight. It is not about theatre or big claims. It is about being able to act before panic takes over. That kind of confidence is worth something. It gives locals something practical, something steady and something that might matter more than they expect. Published 30-September-2026

Major Gateway Upgrade to Reshape Bracken Ridge Roads, Paths and Access

Bracken Ridge News — Sat, 03 Oct 2026 10:07:52 +0000

A major upgrade to the Gateway Motorway and Bruce Highway is set to bring significant changes to Bracken Ridge, with new road connections, redesigned intersections and expanded shared paths planned across the suburb. Read: Brendale’s $722M Supernode Signals a Power Shift for Brisbane’s North The works form part of the Queensland Government’s Gateway to Bruce Upgrade (G2BU), with construction expected to begin in late 2026, subject to approvals. For Bracken Ridge residents, the project centres on the busy corridor around Barfoot Street, Bracken Ridge Road and the Gateway Motorway — an area set for major transformation. New paths and a continuous northside cycling corridor One of the most notable additions is a continuous shared path running along the northern side of the motorway, effectively creating a direct cycling and walking link between Dohles Rocks Road and Barfoot Street. The route will cross the Pine River, offering a safer and more connected option for commuters travelling between North Lakes, Murrumba Downs and Brisbane’s northside suburbs. While the path will run alongside the motorway, limiting access points in some sections, it is expected to significantly improve long-distance connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians. Major changes at Barfoot Street and St John Fisher precinct Closer to home, the “Bracken Ridge bend” near Barfoot Street and St John Fisher College will see some of the most extensive upgrades. Plans include wider shared paths, new underpasses, upgraded crossings and improved links between existing and new infrastructure — designed to make movement through the area safer and more efficient. A new signalised intersection at Barfoot Street and Bracken Ridge Road is also planned, alongside improved motorway access ramps and connections. The changes are expected to improve access to Tinchi Tamba and surrounding areas, while also linking into new shared paths and underpasses connecting through to parklands and local routes. Photo Credit: TMR Newsletter/Brisbane North Bug Additional connections, including a link under the motorway towards Canterbury Park, are designed to improve local accessibility and create safer movement options for cyclists and pedestrians. Construction impacts and long-term detours Given the scale of the project, construction will be staged over several years, with traffic management and detours expected — particularly around the Bracken Ridge corridor. Cycling and shared path users are also likely to face long-term detours during construction, with authorities indicating that updates will be provided as works progress. A detailed staging plan is expected closer to the start of construction, outlining how disruptions will be managed for both motorists and active transport users. The timeline — and what it means locally While the headline changes are now clearer, the timeline is less immediate. Construction is not expected to begin until late 2026, meaning the project will remain in planning and approvals for some time yet. Even then, the scale of the works means disruption will be a long-term reality for Bracken Ridge and surrounding suburbs. Staged construction, shifting traffic conditions and extended detours are likely to be part of daily life as the upgrade rolls out. Beyond the first stage, further upgrades along the Bruce Highway corridor remain in the pipeline, including additional road connections and new bridges over the Pine River. Those elements are still in design and subject to further development. For residents, the next phase will be less about construction and more about detail — how the project is staged, where access points sit, and how well the final design balances improved connectivity with local impacts.
