Thieves recently broke into the Caboolture BMX Club stealing loan bikes that were used to teach children how to ride.
Caboolture BMX Club Vice President Shaun Batty believes that the incident happened between 7 pm (17 October) and 3.45 pm (18 October 2022) considering that one of the club’s coaches was at the premises until 7 pm and returned the next day at around 4 pm.
It was then that they found out that the locked storage was broken into. The storage facility is located at the end of their existing storage area and was built following the floods. They kept the bikes and whipper snippers at the said storage.
The thieves, they said, tried to break into other facilities at the complex but only managed to get into the storage shed, where no cameras are currently installed, using a wrench. Stolen were six BMX bikes (two black DKs – one micro and one pro –, a red Redline mini, a white Redline mini, a blue expert (undetermined brand) and a black and green DK mini wheeler) worth about $4,000 and two whipper snippers which are valued at $2,000.
The bikes were for use of kids who want to learn how to ride but cannot afford to buy an expensive racing bike. The club only has a limited number of these loan bikes, so the break-in incident will definitely impact their ability to loan a training bike.
Caboolture BMX Club Vice President Shaun Batty said that stealing from kids and from a not-for-profit organisation is “unacceptable.” Although he is hopeful that the offenders will eventually hand the stolen bikes and whipper snippers back to the club or the local police station.
The club has since purchased security cameras for the storage facility.
