A campaign to create a more familiar, village-like environment for people living with dementia at Caboolture Hospital is seeking community support to help bring the project to completion.

The proposed Caboolture Village would form part of the hospital’s Acute Cognitive Care Unit, creating a calmer and more homely setting where patients could maintain familiar routines, move around with greater confidence, and take part in meaningful activities.
A More Familiar Hospital Setting
The Common Good said $80,000 has already been raised towards the project, while another $37,000 is needed to fully fund the refurbishment. The organisation is now calling for further community support to help complete the planned upgrade.
The fundraising appeal highlights the difficulties hospital admission can present for older people living with dementia. Unfamiliar surroundings, constant noise, clinical furniture and disrupted routines can increase confusion, distress and withdrawal, according to The Common Good.
Caboolture Village is intended to provide a more homely environment for patients experiencing cognitive decline. The proposed space would support familiar routines while providing opportunities for patients to move around and spend meaningful time with others.
The ACCU ward at Caboolture Hospital is described by The Common Good as an eight-bed specialised unit for patients significantly impacted by dementia. Most patients arrive after time in acute care, with the appeal noting that some come to the unit following a life-changing diagnosis.
Care can focus on managing complex behaviours and symptoms associated with cognitive decline. The Common Good says these challenges can cause distress for both patients and their families, highlighting the need for an environment designed around their needs.
Supporting Independence And Mobility
The proposed refurbishment would support independence, dignity, and mobility while providing opportunities for familiarity and meaningful activity. The Common Good also said the environment would allow patients to reminisce and maintain familiar routines.
Diversional activities would form part of the proposed space, providing patients with opportunities to engage and offering distractions intended to reduce distress and agitation. The approach centres on familiarity, mobility and meaningful activity within the hospital setting. The Common Good says enhancing the physical environment can provide patients with greater comfort, independence, orientation and opportunities for connection.
The organisation’s fundraising appeal also points to the experience of Charlie’s Village at The Prince Charles Hospital, a similar village-like space created within its specialist dementia care unit. The Common Good says that project was designed to support individualised patient care, relationships and social interaction.
Campaign Continues For Final Funding
The Caboolture Village appeal is being run by The Common Good, which is seeking community donations to complete the refurbishment. The organisation says the additional funding is needed to fully fund the project.
Caboolture Village is scheduled for completion in 2026 and is inspired by Charlie’s Village. Planned features include a workbench, farmhouse kitchen and payphone, alongside destinations intended to encourage nostalgia and engagement.
