Luna has taken the top spot on Moreton Bay’s list of popular cat names, with registration data revealing the names, breeds, and suburbs with the highest numbers of registered cats.

Released for International Cat Day (8 August), the figures from the City of Moreton Bay show Luna is the most popular registered cat name, with 164 cats registered under the name.
Bella followed with 109 registrations, while Charlie came in third with 93. Milo, Coco and Simba rounded out the next three spots, followed by Cleo, Missy, Molly and Mia.
Caboolture and Morayfield lead cat registrations
Caboolture recorded the highest number of registered cats in the City, with 882. Morayfield was close behind with 869 registrations, while Dakabin had 840. Kallangur followed with 750 and Narangba recorded 679.
Across the wider Moreton Bay area, 12,308 cats are currently registered. Domestic Short Hair was by far the most commonly registered breed. There were 7,822 registered cats listed under the breed, making it by far the most common feline type in the region.
Domestic Medium Hair was next with 1,837 registrations, followed by Ragdoll cats with 1,235. Domestic Long Hair accounted for 422 registrations, while 295 Burmese cats were registered.
Registration helps reunite lost cats
The registration figures also highlight the role registration can play when cats go missing. According to the City, 327 lost cats were reunited with their owners during the last financial year, highlighting the role registration can play when pets go missing.
Mayor Peter Flannery said some residents may not realise cats are required to be registered, noting that rules can differ between Queensland.
“City of Moreton Bay has the same registration rules for dogs and cats, both wonderful pets which bring a lot of joy to their ‘paw-rents’.
In Moreton Bay, cats and dogs must be registered by 12 weeks of age, or within 14 days of being brought into the City. Registration requirements operate under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 and Animal Management Local Law 2023.
Cats and dogs must also be microchipped and wear an identification tag containing their owner’s contact details while outside the home.

Registration renewals are due by 30 September, with renewal notices to be issued soon.
Luna currently holds the top spot among registered cat names in Moreton Bay. With 12,308 cats currently registered across the City, the data offers a snapshot of the region’s feline population and the names residents have chosen for their pets.
